The 5kg SUDO S-8855 phantom black sand is the bulk dark-substrate option for hobbyists scaping a full tank rather than a nano. Made from pure natural sand minerals, it is pre-washed and inert, so it won’t alter our soft, slightly acidic local water. Note the grain runs slightly larger than a true fine black sand, which actually helps with flow through the bed and makes it a touch easier to keep clean.

A dark base does a lot of visual work. Fish and plants show deeper colour against black, and a planted layout looks more finished and contrasty under decent lighting. The 5kg bag covers a standard two or three-foot tank in one go, so you avoid mixing batches. With the slightly coarser grain, detritus tends to stay on the surface for siphoning rather than working deep into the bed.
