Description

Suitable substrates for terrarium animals
To give the terrarium animals a home close to nature the terrarium needs to be designed close to the animals biotope. According to the requirements of the animals the size of the terrarium is crucial, together among other factors. The setting up depends on the right substrate, the adequate plants, the air circulation, the lighting and the temperature in the terrarium.

Using JBL TerraCoco Humus as terrarium substrate in SG

Coco humus is a workhorse substrate for tropical terrariums, and it suits Singapore keepers especially well. This compressed coir expands with water into a soft, dark, moisture-holding bed that mirrors the humid forest floor many of our reptiles, amphibians, and invertebrates come from. It holds dampness without going sour quickly, which matters in our climate where enclosures need steady humidity rather than a soggy or bone-dry base.

We use it as the foundation layer for planted and bioactive setups, where its structure lets roots take hold and gives springtails and isopods somewhere to burrow and break down waste. Because it rehydrates from a compact brick, it stores easily in a small flat until you need it, and you mix only what the enclosure requires. Pair it with leaf litter and a clean-up crew and you have the makings of a low-maintenance, self-cleaning vivarium floor.

Find it in our turtle & reptile range. To build on it, our isopod culture guide and clean-up crew guide cover the living side, while our paludarium build guide shows it working in a semi-aquatic layout.
