Description
Substrates suitable for terrarium animals
To give the terrarium animals a home modelled on nature the terrarium needs to be modelled closely on the animals’ biotope. It is crucial that the size of the terrarium suits the animals’ requirements, amongst other factors. During the set up it is important to have the right substrate, plants, air circulation, lighting and the temperature in the terrarium.
For desert terrariums: natural substrate made of fine sand, grain size: 0.7-1.25 mm
Fine, virtually dust-free sand.
Fine grains encourage the natural digging behaviour of many species
Round grain shape reduces abrasive effect on the animals’ skin

JBL TerraSand Nature White for Desert Setups
TerraSand in Nature White is a fine, natural desert sand with a 0.7-1.25mm grain, made for terrariums housing arid-habitat reptiles. The pale, even grain recreates a convincing desert floor and lets your animal display natural digging and basking behaviour. We recommend it for keepers building a dry biotope where the substrate needs to stay loose and dust-controlled rather than holding moisture like a tropical mix would.
For Singapore keepers, a desert enclosure is essentially a battle against our naturally high ambient humidity, so pairing this sand with strong ventilation and proper basking heat is what keeps the setup correct for arid species. The fine, rounded grain is gentle and easy to spot-clean, and you can sift waste out much like a litter tray. Keep the layer deep enough for natural burrowing if your species digs.
