This blended substrate is mixed for better drainage, which makes it a sensible base for tortoises and reptiles that need a drier footing than pure coco coir provides. Good drainage keeps moisture from pooling under a tortoise’s belly, helping protect skin and shell, while still supporting any live plants you bed into the enclosure. The mix aims to balance airiness for plant roots with enough body to hold a natural, dig-friendly layer.

Singapore’s high ambient humidity makes drainage even more important, since a substrate that stays soggy invites mould and shell or skin issues. We recommend layering it deep enough for your species to settle into, keeping a drier surface zone, and spot-cleaning waste promptly. Match the moisture level to the animal you keep: arid species want it mostly dry, while tropical setups can run a little damper at depth.
