Twinstar E Series LED Review: Full-Spectrum Planted
Twinstar’s E Series sits in a strange spot in the Singapore market โ beloved by competition aquascapers for its colour rendering, occasionally maligned for its price, and consistently misunderstood next to its more visible Korean sibling, the C Series. This twinstar e series led review from Gensou Aquascaping at 5 Everton Park is built from two years of bench measurements and client installations, including three competition pieces shot under E Series fixtures. Expect detail on spectrum, real PAR numbers under PUB tap conditions, and an honest take on whether the SGD premium over Chihiros is justified.
Series Positioning and What Sits in the Box
The E Series is Twinstar’s full-spectrum planted line, with diffused covers and no native dimming controller, relying instead on an external Smart Dimmer accessory or a third-party PWM dimmer. The 600EA covers 60 cm tanks at 38 W; the 900EA hits 90 cm at 60 W. Build is robust, with thick anodised housings and proper IP-rated cables. Mounting is via slim glass-edge clips that hold securely on 5 to 12 mm rimless tanks.
Spectrum Quality and Plant Response
The E Series spectrum is the headline. Twinstar tunes it for high CRI with strong red and blue peaks alongside a flat green band, and the visual result on plant colour is excellent. Reds on Rotala H’ra, AR mini and Rotala-dominant scapes appear deeper without the magenta cast some other fixtures introduce. Greens stay vibrant and bucephalandra blues read accurately rather than flattening to purple.
PAR Output in Real Tanks
At 36 cm water depth in a standard 60 P, we measured 100 to 120 PAR at the substrate from the 600EA. That is enough for high-light carpets, though pushing HC Cuba into very compact growth typically wants the 600EC or twin 600EA fixtures. The 900EA over a standard 90 cm gives 110 PAR at the substrate, which most planted builds find ideal once paired with sensible CO2.
Dimming and Control Realities
The E Series has no native controller. You either run it on a mechanical timer at 100 percent (acceptable for low-tech setups), pair it with the Twinstar Smart Dimmer (about SGD 130), or use a third-party PWM controller. For competition builds we use the Smart Dimmer with manual ramping; for everyday client tanks the simpler timer approach works. Our programmable light timer guide covers options.
Heat and Power in Singapore Conditions
The E Series runs cool. The 600EA at full output adds roughly 0.4 degrees to a 60 litre tank at 30 degrees ambient, similar to or slightly less than the WRGB II at the same length. The slim profile sits well above water in suspended mounts and benefits from natural convection. SP Group’s $0.32/kWh tariff means the 38 W draw costs around $4.40 per month at an 8 hour photoperiod.
Where the E Series Earns Its Premium
For competition pieces and display tanks where colour rendering is the priority, the Twinstar E Series produces images that just look more saturated and natural than equivalent Chihiros output. The diffuser cover gives a softer fall of light that flatters hardscape texture, and the high CRI translates directly to better photography for aquascape competition entries. For a working hobbyist tank in a HDB living room, that premium may not feel worth it.
Comparison With Chihiros and ADA Solar
Against Chihiros WRGB II, the E Series wins on colour rendering and build, loses on outright PAR per dollar, and ties on coverage. Against ADA Solar RGB, it is roughly 60 percent of the price with 80 percent of the visual quality. Within Twinstar’s own range, the C Series RGB above it adds RGB tunability at a meaningful cost premium; for most planted tanks the simpler E Series suffices.
SGD Pricing and Local Stock
Expect $380 to $440 for the 600EA at Polyart or Reef Wonderland, $520 to $590 for the 900EA, and $130 to $150 for the Smart Dimmer accessory. Stock is intermittent compared with Chihiros; if you see the size you want in stock at a fair price, do not wait. Carousell occasionally surfaces second-hand units around $230 to $300; check the diffuser for yellowing, which indicates older stock with degraded LEDs.
Limitations to Weigh
No native dimming, no app control, and a noticeable price premium are the three honest limitations. The E Series is a fixture for hobbyists who care about light quality first and convenience second. If you want app-based ramping, photoperiod automation or a tight budget, look at budget LED options instead.
Verdict
The Twinstar E Series is the best-rendering planted fixture under SGD 500 we have used. For competition builds, photographed display tanks and hobbyists who notice the difference between accurate and approximate colour, it is worth the premium. For everyday HDB tanks where convenience and price matter more, Chihiros remains the more sensible choice. Both are right answers to different questions.
