AF Magnesium Test Kit

Aquaforest TestPro Magnesium is designed to quickly measure the concentration of Magnesium (Mg) in marine water. Magnesium plays an important role in many biological processes, e.g. takes part in the construction of hard coral’s calcium carbonate skeleton. Due to its unique chemical properties it has significant impact on seawater buffering capacity, and also prevents excessive precipitation of calcium carbonate on aquarium equipment.
Adequate level of Magnesium is crucial in maintaining proper Calcium and Alkalinity balance in reef aquaria. Mg levels should be analysed regularly, together with other critical water parameters like Calcium and Alkalinity. The concentration of Magnesium in natural seawater is between 1260-1460 mg/l (ppm).
Test Kit contains sufficient reagents to perform approx. 55-60 separate tests within that range.

Tracking Magnesium On A Singapore Reef With The AF Magnesium Test Kit

On the reef tanks we keep here in Singapore, magnesium is the parameter that quietly holds calcium and alkalinity in line, yet it’s the one most hobbyists test least often. This Aquaforest kit lets you check Mg directly from a small water sample, so you can spot a slow drift before it shows up as stalled coral growth or unstable alkalinity. We suggest logging a reading roughly weekly until you learn how fast your system draws it down.

Magnesium consumption climbs as coral mass and coralline algae spread, and on heavily stocked SPS systems it can fall faster than newcomers expect. Because our tap is chloraminated and unsuitable for top-ups, most local reefers mix saltwater from RO/DI, and freshly mixed batches don’t always land at target Mg. Testing the new water and the display separately tells you whether a low reading is consumption or a salt-mix shortfall, which changes how you correct it.
