Yellow Clown Goby Care Guide

The yellow clown goby (Gobiodon okinawae) is a 4 cm canary-yellow reef gem that perches on SPS branches all day, blinking at the room with comically expressive eyes. They are perfectly suited to nano reefs as small as 40 litres and pair beautifully with Acropora and birdsnest colonies — though the perching can occasionally irritate sensitive corals. This guide from Gensou Aquascaping at 5 Everton Park covers their husbandry, feeding and the small but real coral-pairing trade-off.

Identification

Gobiodon okinawae is bright lemon-yellow across the entire body with no markings beyond a slight darker shade on the dorsal fin. Several closely related Gobiodon species exist (citrinus goby, blue-spotted goby, green clown goby) and they all behave similarly but the Okinawa is the most widely available and most reliably yellow.

Tank Size and Coral Compatibility

Minimum 40 litres for a single fish, 75 litres for a bonded pair. They are nano specialists and rarely thrive in tanks above 200 litres because they get lost in the volume. They pair naturally with branching corals — Acropora, birdsnest, Seriatopora and Stylophora — perching between branches as if it were a live coral apartment building.

Acropora Perching Trade-Off

Yellow clown gobies occasionally nip the polyps of the Acropora they perch on, mostly during territorial disputes or breeding. Healthy, well-fed pairs rarely cause damage. Underfed or stressed specimens may strip polyps from a single colony over weeks. Keep at least two suitable host corals so the goby can move on if one starts showing irritation.

Diet

Carnivorous micro-feeders. Feed twice daily with frozen mysis, brine, cyclops and high-quality pellet. They are slow eaters and easily outcompeted by faster fish, so target-feed using a turkey baster directly toward their perch coral. Live copepods from a refugium supplement well. Pellet, frozen feed and refugium gear live in the aquarium equipment range.

Tank Mate Compatibility

Peaceful with most reef fish. They tolerate clownfish, peaceful wrasses, royal grammas, dwarf angels and other small reef-safe fish. Avoid larger predators (hawkfish, lionfish, larger angels) that view them as prey. Multiple yellow clown gobies in the same small tank fight unless acquired as a bonded pair from the same shipment.

Reef Compatibility Beyond Acropora

Generally reef-safe with all corals except the perch-coral nipping caveat above. They ignore zoanthids, palythoas, leathers, mushrooms, LPS like hammers and frogspawn, clams and ornamental shrimp. They are particularly good additions to nano SPS tanks because their small size and perching behaviour add visual interest without adding bioload.

Behaviour and Personality

Bold for their size, yellow clown gobies stake out a territory of one to three coral colonies and rarely leave. They puff up and display when other fish approach their perch. They become hand-tame within weeks and often rise to greet feeding tongs. Pairs occasionally spawn in captivity, depositing eggs in coral branches.

Water Parameters

Standard reef numbers: 25-26°C, salinity 1.025, pH 8.1-8.4, alkalinity 8-9 dKH, nitrate 2-10 ppm, phosphate 0.03-0.08 ppm. They are sensitive to copper and most medications, so quarantine in observation only. RODI is essential; salt mix, refractometer and test kits sit in the marine saltwater range.

Quarantine and Acclimation

A 14-21 day observation in a small QT tank with a small piece of branching coral or PVC mimicry for perching reduces stress. They tolerate copper poorly compared to most reef fish — use tank-transfer method or hyposalinity at 1.009 if disease emerges. Drip acclimate over 60 minutes from bag to QT.

Singapore Sourcing

Yellow clown gobies are weekly imports through Iwarna, Aquamarin and most marine specialists at SGD 25-50. Pairs sometimes available at SGD 60-90. RDC Reef Discus Centre occasionally has them. Always confirm body fullness and active perching in shop tanks — listless specimens hidden in rockwork often do not recover.

Long Term Care

Healthy yellow clown gobies live 3-5 years, which is shorter than many reef fish but typical of small Gobiodon species. Their nano-friendly size, reef-safe behaviour and bold personality make them one of the most charming small reef additions in the hobby.
