2.5 Gallon Shrimp Nano Planted Setup Guide

A 2.5 gallon shrimp nano planted setup is the most rewarding nano build you can attempt in an HDB flat — low running cost, visible breeding within three months, and zero filtration noise if sized correctly. This guide walks through the specific build we run at Gensou Aquascaping at 5 Everton Park, Singapore, covering hardscape, plant list, PUB tap water prep, and a realistic SGD budget for the full 9.5 L scape.

Tank, Lid, and Stand

A rimless 20x20x24 cm ultra-clear cube holds 9.5 L at the fill line. SGD 25-45 at Green Chapter or Polyart. Skip lidded kits — they trap heat and algae. A thin acrylic splash guard with a 1 cm gap handles jumping fish, though shrimp-only tanks rarely need one. The stand only needs to support 12 kg filled weight, so any stable desk or IKEA LACK side table (SGD 15) works.

Substrate: Active vs Inert

For Neocaridina on PUB tap water, inert black sand (2-3 mm grain) at 3 cm depth is ideal. SGD 8-14 per 5 kg bag. For Caridina or crystal reds, active soil like ADA Amazonia Ver.2 or Dennerle Shrimp King Active drops pH to 5.8-6.4 automatically — SGD 35-55 per 3 L bag. Active soil leaches ammonia for 3-5 weeks, so cycle thoroughly before adding livestock.

Hardscape Layout

Two pieces of spiderwood (15-20 cm) arranged in a loose V, plus 4-6 seiryu or ohko dragon stones at the base. Total hardscape cost SGD 20-40. Keep one open foreground of 8-10 cm for shrimp grazing — they follow sightlines, not cover. Boil driftwood for 20 minutes to sink it and release initial tannins. See nano hardscape basics for composition rules.

Plant Selection for 9.5 L

Low-tech, CO2-optional list: Bucephalandra sp. (2-3 small clumps glued to wood, SGD 6-12 each), Anubias nana petite (one rhizome, SGD 8), Microsorum pteropus ‘Trident’ (one portion, SGD 7), Cryptocoryne parva carpet (6-8 tissue culture pots at SGD 6 each), and a floating mat of Salvinia minima for nitrate export and shrimp cover. Total plant spend SGD 50-90.

Lighting Spec

A 15-20 W nano LED clip-on (Chihiros C2, WRGB II Mini, or Twinstar S-series) delivers 60-80 PAR at substrate — plenty for this plant list. SGD 60-120 depending on brand. Run 7 hours/day on a smart plug timer. Algae on the front glass means drop to 6 hours, not fertiliser cuts.

Filtration

A small sponge filter (XY-380 or ISTA equivalent) powered by a USB air pump at 1-1.5 L/min. Total SGD 12-22. Never use internal power filters in a shrimp tank — the intake will suck fry, and flow disturbs biofilm. Pre-filter sponges over any intake if you insist on HOB.

PUB Tap Water Prep

Singapore tap water averages TDS 90-110, GH 3-5, KH 1-2, pH 7.6-8.0. Neocaridina want TDS 180-220, so remineralise with Salty Shrimp GH/KH+ at roughly 1 scoop per 10 L. For Caridina, start with RO water (0 TDS) and remineralise with GH+ only to TDS 110-130. Always rest water 24 hours with dechlorinator before top-offs. Full walkthrough in PUB tap water for shrimp.

Cycling Schedule

Week 1-2: dose 2 ppm ammonia daily, Seachem Stability twice daily. Week 3: ammonia clears within 12 hours, nitrite spikes. Week 4-5: nitrite clears, nitrate rises to 10-20 ppm. Week 6: 50% water change, verify 0/0/10 readings, add first 5 shrimp. Full 6-week cycle is non-negotiable for active soil builds.

Drip Acclimation on Arrival

Shrimp ship stressed. Drip acclimate over 90-120 minutes at 2-3 drops/second using airline tubing with a regulator knot. Match temperature first in a floating bag, then drip. Never dump bag water into the display.

Stocking Plan

Start with 10 Neocaridina, add 10 more after 6 weeks once the colony settles. Expected population at month 6: 40-80 animals. One Malaysian trumpet snail and 2 nerite snails keep glass and substrate clean. No fish — even “shrimp-safe” chili rasboras will eat fry opportunistically. See shrimp-only vs community.

Feeding and Maintenance

One small pellet (Shirakura Ebi Dama or Mosura) every 2-3 days, plus a single indian almond leaf replaced monthly. Weekly water change is 10-15% using matched-TDS water. Never chase parameters — stability beats perfection.
