Keeping the Jewel Orchid (Malaxis lowii) thriving in Singapore
Despite the “aquatic plant” label often slapped on jewel orchids, Malaxis lowii is a terrestrial bog orchid that hates being fully submerged long-term. We sell it for emersed and paludarium-style displays, where its velvety bronze leaves shine. In an open-top tank, plant the pot above the waterline or in a damp riparium zone so the crown stays dry and the roots stay moist. Submerge it permanently and the leaves will melt within weeks.
Singapore’s natural humidity actually works in your favour here, which is why this orchid is far easier to keep here than in temperate climates needing misting systems. Keep it shaded under floating plants or in the lower-light corner of your scape, and shield it from direct ceiling fans that dry the foliage. Our ambient 27-29C is fine; no heat mat is needed. Use soft, dechlorinated water when misting, and avoid splashing fertiliser-heavy tank water directly onto the leaves, which can scorch them.
Browse the rest of our live plants range to pair it with mosses and ferns, and read our emersed section guide plus the paludarium vs terrarium breakdown to plan the right setup before planting.
