Hints
DWARF ARROWHEADThis dwarf arrowhead is a beloved aquarium plant with very narrow, ribbon-like leaves. You could be forgiven for thinking at first glance that the leaves look like Vallisnerias. Sagittaria subulata var. pussila is highly variable and can grow anywhere from a few centimetres up to 40 cm tall. Under good lighting, this arrowhead variety stays nice and short for use in the foreground. Regularly removing any runners with longer leaves will help keep the carpet from overgrowing. Medium-hard to hard water is best for these plants, but they tolerate a variety of water temperatures.
Dennerle Dwarf Sagittaria Pusilla for Local Scapes
This Dennerle pot of Sagittaria subulata var. pusilla is the more compact dwarf arrowhead, prized for narrow ribbon-like leaves that stay short in the foreground under good light. It is an undemanding rosette plant that does not require CO2 to thrive, which makes it a practical carpet option for the many low-tech planted tanks we set up in HDB flats. Split the pot into small clumps after removing the rockwool and plant them a couple of centimetres apart.
It naturally prefers medium-hard water, but it adapts to a wide range, so our softer local tap water is workable, especially with a remineralised or buffered substrate. Keep light moderate-to-strong to hold it low, and regularly snip off any longer runner leaves to stop the carpet overgrowing. In our warm 27-29C tanks growth is consistent year-round rather than seasonal.
