Begonia Heracleifolia for Paludariums in Singapore

Begonia heracleifolia is a striking foliage begonia with bold, deeply lobed star-shaped leaves, and we treat it as an emersed and paludarium plant rather than a fully submerged aquatic. It thrives above the waterline on damp hardscape, cork bark or the margins of a paludarium, where its dramatic leaves add height and texture. Singapore’s naturally high humidity actually works in its favour, so it often settles in faster here than in drier climates once roots take hold.

Keep the rootball moist but not waterlogged, give it bright indirect light rather than harsh direct sun, and ensure decent airflow to prevent fungal spotting in our warm, humid air. It is not meant to be planted underwater for the long term, so position it on an elevated ledge, a wood crook or a planted background where its base stays above the water surface and the leaves can breathe.

For building the right environment see our paludarium setup guide, and learn the difference between formats in aquarium vs terrarium vs paludarium. Explore companions in our live plants range.
