Description

The Green Chamaleon variety has come about by breeding E. ‘Simply Red‘ x. A pure green colour in its emersed form, this new plant transforms into a colourful Echinodorus in the aquarium. The leaf blades are slightly wavy and initially light green in colour. After a few months, with good lighting they form wonderfully coloured leaves. The colours range from olive green to wine red variegation. A real highlight for any Echinodorus fan!

Echinodorus Green Chameleon colour in Singapore tanks

The Green Chameleon sword is a real talking point because it shapeshifts as it settles: leaves emerge light green, then under good lighting mature into a range of olive-green to wine-red variegation. We love it as a robust midground-to-background focal plant for larger HDB and condo display tanks, where its slightly wavy blades catch the eye and its sturdy rosette anchors the layout without constant fuss.

Like all Echinodorus, it is a heavy root feeder, so a nutrient-rich substrate and root tabs are key to triggering that colourful transformation; thin substrate keeps it stubbornly green. Strong light brings out the reds. Our soft, slightly acidic Singapore tap water suits it once dechlorinated, and ambient 27-29C needs no temperature control. Expect a few transitional emersed leaves to drop early on before the true submerged form develops.
