Homalomena sp. Broad Sekadau South in Singapore tanks
This Bornean Homalomena is a slow, hardy rhizome plant with broad, deep-green leaves that bring a lush jungle feel to the midground. We like it for low-tech HDB tanks because it asks little: it grows from a rhizome much like Anubias and Bucephalandra, so you can plant it with the rhizome exposed or tie it to wood and rock rather than burying it. Its unhurried pace means minimal trimming and a stable, structured look.
Keep the rhizome above the substrate to prevent rot, the most common issue we see with rhizome plants. Our soft, slightly acidic Singapore tap water suits it once dechlorinated, and ambient 27-29C needs no temperature control in most homes. Low to moderate light keeps algae off the broad leaves while still supporting steady growth. A little water-column dosing helps, as it draws nutrients readily through both roots and leaves.
