Hygrophila Balsamica as a Feathery Accent

Hygrophila balsamica stands out among the Hygrophila for its delicate, finely divided leaves that take on a fern-like, almost feathery look in good conditions. We like it as an easy, fast-growing plant that adds movement and softness to the midground or background. Its broad temperature tolerance covers our ambient high-twenties water comfortably, and it accepts the soft, slightly acidic tap water Singapore hobbyists condition for their tanks.

Like most Hygrophila it is genuinely beginner-friendly and grows quickly, helping to outcompete algae in a maturing setup. The finely cut foliage is most pronounced under brighter light and with CO2; in lower light the leaves tend to stay simpler and less ornate. Propagation is easy from cuttings, so trim the tops and replant them to thicken the stand, and pinch regularly to keep the bush full rather than leggy.

See the rest of our background plants, and read our hygrophila care guide and the stem plant trim and replant guide to keep it looking its best.
