Caring for the Jewel Malaxis Red in Singapore
We carry the Jewel Malaxis Red as a terrestrial jewel orchid, prized for its dark, velvety foliage rather than as a fully submerged aquarium plant. It thrives emersed in high humidity, which makes it a natural fit for the foreground floor of a paludarium, riparium, or a closed terrarium where its roots stay damp but not flooded. In Singapore’s humid climate it adapts readily, though indoor air-conditioning can dry the air around it, so a covered enclosure keeps conditions stable.
Plant it into a fine, airy mix or a moss-clad hardscape pocket, keep the rootball moist with soft water, and give it gentle, diffused light to preserve leaf colour. Direct high-output lighting tends to scorch jewel orchids, so we position them in shaded zones beneath taller emergent growth. Our chloraminated tap water should be dechlorinated first; many growers prefer RO or rainwater for the most sensitive specimens once established.
Treat it as a humidity-loving accent, not a stem you submerge and forget. Our aquarium vs terrarium vs paludarium and paludarium setup guide explain suitable enclosures, and you can browse more live plants for emersed layouts.
