Description

Syngonium podophyllum ‘White Butterfly’ is a variety that matures to be around 80% white with a green colored border.

Syngonium podophyllum is very popular and easy plant species to care for that is native to a wide region of Latin America – from Mexico to Bolivia. It is also known as the Arrowhead Philodendron, Arrowhead Plant, or simply by its genus name – Syngonium. Its leaves are distinctively shaped like an arrow, hence the common name references. This moderately long growing tropical plant comes in a wide variety of colors and cultivars and appreciates moderate lighting with moderate to heavy watering needs but tends to be quite forgiving on both ends of the spectrum. Over time, it can grow quite large: around 3-6 feet, however, it will grow more like a vine as it matures and not support itself as a free-standing plant.

As an emersed aroid it climbs hardscape and trails over edges, lending a soft, light-toned counterpoint to dark wood and green mosses. Keep it above the waterline; like its siblings it is a humidity lover, not a submerged aquatic.

Our consistently humid climate is exactly what this variety wants, so it holds its lighter colouration well inside a glass vivarium without heavy misting. Place it where it receives bright but indirect light, as harsh direct light can scorch the pale areas while too little reverts the variegation toward green. Root it into damp substrate or a mossy ledge and pinch back the vines to keep it bushy and balanced.
