Description

Vesicularia ferriei ‘Weeping’

Vesicularia ferriei ‘Weeping’, commonly known as Weeping Moss, is believed to originate from China and has been distributed by Oriental Aquarium Plants. ‘Weeping’ is a fleshy, 1-3 cm tall hanging moss with teardrop-like bright green shoots. It is best attached to driftwood or roots, as its drooping growth pattern helps to create depth and contrast in the aquarium. ‘Weeping’ has low demands, is fast growing and should be pruned frequently with scissors to maintain an attractive shape.
Plant info

Type:

Moss

Origin:

Asia

Country or continent where a plant is the most common. Cultivars arise or are bred in cultivation.

Growth rate:

Medium

Growth rate of the plant compared to other aquatic plants.

Height:

3 – 5+

Average height (cm) of the plant after two months in the tank.

Light demand:

Medium

The average or medium light demand of an aquarium plant is 0,5 W/L.

CO2 :

Low

A medium need in CO2 is 6-14 mg/L. A high demand in CO2 is approx. 15-25 mg/L.

Plants that require a little extra

The plants require 20-40 lumen (or ½ watt T5) per litre to thrive.

CO2 supply is recommended to help plants grow with good colour and density.

Weekly maintenance times of ½-1 hour will be required depending on the growth and development of the plants.

Bottom substrate and liquid fertilisers are required. Special fertiliser is recommended.

Growing Weeping Moss in a Singapore Tank

Weeping Moss is one of our favourite mosses for adding a soft, cascading look over driftwood, and it does well in the warm conditions most of us keep here. In an ambient 27-29C room-temperature tank it stays compact and green, though growth slows and shoots can thin if water sits at the upper end for long stretches. A little surface flow and weekly water changes keep older fronds from collecting detritus and browning underneath.

Tie or glue it thinly to wood or stone rather than bunching it; thick clumps trap waste and rot from the inside in our warm water. Trim regularly with sharp scissors to encourage the weeping habit and to push fresh growth outward. It tolerates low to moderate light, so it suits shaded HDB or condo nano setups without a high-output unit, and pairs naturally with shrimp who graze the biofilm it collects.

For more on shaping and securing it, see our weeping moss care guide and the methods for attaching moss to driftwood. Browse the rest of our epiphytes range for anubias and bucephalandra that share the same easy, no-substrate approach.
