What Is Seachem Prime?

Seachem Prime is a concentrated water conditioner that has earned its reputation as the most recommended product in the aquarium hobby. Walk into any fish shop in Singapore, browse any fishkeeping forum, or ask any experienced hobbyist, and Prime will invariably be at the top of the list.

What makes Prime different from basic dechlorinators is its ability to do far more than just remove chlorine. It handles chloramine (critical for Singapore), detoxifies ammonia and nitrite in emergencies, and does all of this at a remarkably concentrated dose that makes it one of the most cost-effective products on the market.

Available in sizes from 50 ml to 4 litres, Prime is manufactured by Seachem Laboratories, a company known for its science-driven approach to aquarium products.

What Seachem Prime Does

Prime performs several functions in a single product:

Removes Chlorine

Like all water conditioners, Prime instantly neutralises chlorine in tap water, making it safe for fish. Chlorine damages gill tissue and kills beneficial bacteria in your filter.

Removes Chloramine

This is where Prime truly distinguishes itself. Chloramine is a compound of chlorine and ammonia used by many water utilities worldwide, including PUB in Singapore. Basic dechlorinators break the chlorine-ammonia bond and neutralise the chlorine, but they leave the ammonia behind. Prime breaks the bond, neutralises the chlorine, and detoxifies the released ammonia, rendering it non-toxic to fish while keeping it available for beneficial bacteria to process.

Detoxifies Ammonia

Prime converts toxic free ammonia (NH3) into non-toxic ammonium (NH4+) for approximately 48 hours. This does not remove ammonia from the water — your test kit will still detect it — but it makes it harmless to fish. Your biological filter continues to process the detoxified ammonia normally.

Detoxifies Nitrite

Similar to its effect on ammonia, Prime detoxifies nitrite (NO2) for approximately 48 hours. This is invaluable during the cycling process when nitrite spikes can stress or kill fish.

Detoxifies Heavy Metals

Prime binds and neutralises heavy metals such as copper, lead, and zinc that may be present in tap water from old plumbing. This is particularly relevant in older HDB blocks where copper pipes may leach trace metals into the water supply.

Why Prime Is Essential for Singapore Fishkeepers

Singapore’s tap water is treated with chloramine by PUB. This is important to understand because chloramine behaves very differently from chlorine:

  • Chloramine does not evaporate. Unlike chlorine, which dissipates from water within 24–48 hours if left standing, chloramine remains stable indefinitely. You cannot simply age your water in a bucket to make it safe.
  • Chloramine releases ammonia when broken down. A basic dechlorinator that only handles chlorine will break the chloramine bond but leave you with a dose of free ammonia in your tank water. For a newly set-up tank or one with a fragile biological filter, this ammonia release can be harmful.
  • Chloramine is lethal to fish at concentrations used by PUB. Even a small amount of untreated tap water added during a water change can damage gills and stress fish.

Prime addresses all of these issues in one dose. It is, without exaggeration, the single most important product you can own as a fishkeeper in Singapore.

Dosing Guide

Prime is highly concentrated. A little goes a long way:

Method Dose Treats
Standard dosing (cap) 1 capful (5 ml) 200 litres of new water
Precise dosing (drops) 2 drops 1 litre (approximately 4 litres per gallon)
Syringe dosing 1 ml 40 litres of new water

How to Dose During Water Changes

  1. Determine the volume of new water you are adding (not the total tank volume for routine changes).
  2. Add the appropriate dose of Prime to the new water before adding it to the tank, or dose the tank directly if you are refilling with a hose.
  3. If refilling directly from the tap (common with larger tanks), dose Prime for the full volume of water being replaced and add it to the tank before or as the water flows in.

For smaller tanks common in Singapore HDB setups (20–60 litres), a 1 ml syringe provides the most accurate dosing. The thread inside the Prime bottle cap holds approximately 1 ml, which is a handy trick for quick dosing of nano tanks.

Emergency Dosing

One of Prime’s most valuable features is its ability to serve as an emergency ammonia and nitrite detoxifier. In crisis situations, you can safely dose up to five times the normal amount:

Situation Dose Notes
Normal water change 1x (5 ml per 200L) Standard dose for dechlorination
Ammonia detected (0.25–0.5 ppm) 2x normal dose for full tank volume Detoxifies ammonia for 48 hrs; do a water change first
Ammonia emergency (1.0+ ppm) 5x normal dose for full tank volume Maximum safe dose; perform large water change first
Nitrite spike during cycling 2–5x normal dose for full tank volume Detoxifies nitrite; redose every 48 hrs as needed

At emergency doses, Prime is still safe for fish, plants, shrimp, and beneficial bacteria. It does not affect your biological filter’s ability to process ammonia and nitrite — it simply buys you time.

Common Questions About Using Prime

The Sulphur Smell

Prime has a distinctive and rather unpleasant sulphur (rotten egg) smell. This is completely normal and is a result of the sulphur-based compounds that make Prime work. The smell does not transfer to your tank water at the concentrations used. If you find the smell off-putting, rest assured that it is a sign of a genuine, potent product — not a defect.

Prime and pH

At normal doses, Prime has no meaningful effect on pH. At very high emergency doses (5x), there may be a very slight temporary drop in pH, but this is negligible in any tank with reasonable KH buffering.

Prime and Beneficial Bacteria

Prime does not harm beneficial bacteria in your filter. The detoxified ammonia and nitrite remain available for your nitrifying bacteria to process. This is a key advantage over products that physically remove ammonia (such as zeolite), which starve your bacteria of their food source.

Prime and Test Kits

After dosing Prime, your ammonia test kit may still show a reading. This is because most test kits (API, Salifert) measure total ammonia nitrogen, including the detoxified ammonium. The reading does not mean Prime has failed — the ammonia has been rendered non-toxic even though the test shows its presence. The Seachem Ammonia Alert badge can distinguish between free ammonia and total ammonia if you need to verify.

Prime vs Other Water Conditioners

How does Prime compare to other popular conditioners available in Singapore?

Aloe vera / slime coat No Yes No Yes

Prime’s key advantages are its ammonia/nitrite detoxification capability and its extreme concentration, which translates to superior cost-effectiveness.

Cost-Effectiveness

Prime’s high concentration makes it remarkably economical despite its higher per-bottle price compared to budget conditioners:

  • A 250 ml bottle of Prime treats approximately 10,000 litres of water
  • A 500 ml bottle treats approximately 20,000 litres
  • For a typical 120-litre tank with weekly 50% water changes (60 litres per week), a 250 ml bottle lasts approximately 3 years
  • A 500 ml bottle for the same tank would last approximately 6 years

When you compare cost per litre of water treated, Prime is consistently one of the cheapest conditioners available, despite being one of the most expensive per bottle. For most hobbyists in Singapore, a single 250 ml bottle is a multi-year investment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I overdose Seachem Prime?

Seachem states that Prime can be safely dosed at up to five times the normal concentration. At this level, it is safe for fish, invertebrates (including shrimp), plants, and beneficial bacteria. Dosing beyond 5x is not recommended, though accidental slight overdoses are unlikely to cause harm. If you have severely overdosed (10x or more), perform a partial water change to dilute the excess.

Does Prime expire?

Prime has an indefinite shelf life when stored properly (sealed, away from extreme heat). In Singapore’s climate, store it in a cool area away from direct sunlight. If the product develops an unusually strong or different smell, or if the liquid becomes cloudy, replace it. However, most bottles will remain effective for many years.

Can I use Prime with other Seachem products?

Yes. Prime is compatible with all other Seachem products, including Stability (bacterial starter), Flourish (plant fertiliser), and Purigen (water polisher). There is no need to wait between dosing Prime and other products. The only exception is that Prime may affect copper-based medications, as it binds heavy metals. If medicating with copper, consult the medication’s instructions regarding water conditioner compatibility.

Should I add Prime before or after adding water to the tank?

Either method works. For the safest approach, add Prime to a bucket of tap water before pouring it into the tank. If you are refilling directly from the tap using a hose (common for larger tanks), add Prime to the tank before the new water flows in, dosing for the volume of water being replaced. The key is that Prime acts instantly on contact, so as long as it is present in the water, fish are protected.
