Aquascaping With Alternanthera Only: All-Red Carpet and Stems
Red plants are typically the accent in a planted tank — a splash of colour against a green backdrop. But what happens when red becomes the entire palette? An aquascape with Alternanthera only flips the convention and delivers a tank that glows with burgundy, crimson, and magenta from foreground to background. At Gensou Aquascaping in Singapore, we have built several mono-genus red scapes and learned exactly what it takes to keep the colour intense without melting leaves.
The Alternanthera Genus for Aquascaping
Alternanthera reineckii is the cornerstone species, available in multiple cultivars that vary in size, leaf shape, and colour intensity. From the compact “Mini” form to the tall standard variety, this genus offers enough diversity to fill every layer of an aquascape. All forms share a preference for high light, iron-rich fertilisation, and CO2 supplementation — non-negotiable requirements if you want red rather than muddy brown.
Species and Cultivar Selection
Alternanthera reineckii “Mini” serves as the foreground plant. It stays 5-10 cm tall when trimmed regularly and forms a dense, reddish-purple carpet under strong light. A. reineckii “Rosanervig” features striking pink veins on pale leaves — a unique texture that provides contrast in the mid-ground. Standard A. reineckii grows to 30-40 cm and works as the background anchor. A. reineckii “Variegated” introduces patches of cream and green for subtle variety within the red theme.
Lighting for Maximum Red Intensity
Alternanthera demands high PAR — aim for 80-120 at substrate level. Full-spectrum LED fixtures with enhanced red and blue wavelengths produce the deepest colours. Under insufficient light, leaves lose their red pigmentation and revert to olive green, defeating the purpose of a mono-red scape. In a 45 cm tall tank, a quality LED like the Chihiros WRGB2 or Twinstar S Series at 80-100 % intensity delivers the necessary output.
CO2 and Nutrient Requirements
Inject CO2 to achieve a lime-green drop checker reading (approximately 30 ppm). Without CO2, Alternanthera grows slowly, develops small leaves, and frequently melts from the lower nodes upward. Iron dosing is critical — maintain 0.1-0.2 ppm of chelated iron (DTPA or EDTA form) through your liquid fertiliser. Singapore’s soft PUB tap water lacks significant iron, so supplementation is essential rather than optional.
Dose macronutrients generously. Nitrogen should not drop below 5 ppm, as nitrogen-starved Alternanthera sheds its lower leaves rapidly. Root tabs every 8 weeks beneath dense clusters give the plants a direct nutrient supply at the root zone, where uptake is most efficient for this genus.
Layout Tips for Visual Depth
An all-red scape risks looking flat because there is no green-to-red contrast to create separation. Combat this by varying leaf size and height aggressively. Plant “Mini” low and tight in the foreground, “Rosanervig” in loose mid-ground clusters at 15-20 cm, and standard A. reineckii tall in the background. A pathway of white cosmetic sand running through the centre breaks up the red mass and adds essential negative space.
Hardscape to Complement the Red
Light-coloured hardscape — pale seiryu stone, petrified wood, or bleached spider wood — contrasts beautifully against red foliage. Dark lava rock, while popular in green scapes, tends to vanish against dark red stems and should be avoided. Position your hardscape to create height variation and planting pockets that guide the viewer’s eye through the layout.
Trimming and Colour Maintenance
Trim tops every two to three weeks and replant the cuttings. The freshly cut tops display the most vivid red, while older lower stems often fade — regular replanting keeps the scape perpetually vibrant. Remove any stems that show persistent green reversion; they may be drawing resources from the surrounding red growth. A strict trim schedule is more important in a mono-genus scape than in a mixed planting because inconsistency is far more visible.
Is an All-Red Scape Practical?
It is more demanding than a green scape — higher light, more CO2, and closer attention to iron and macronutrients. But the visual payoff is extraordinary. A well-maintained Alternanthera-only tank is a showstopper that stops visitors mid-sentence. If you have strong lighting and a reliable CO2 system already in place, the additional effort is modest and the result is unlike anything else in the planted tank hobby.
