This best fish for 10 gallon tank guide is a working document rather than a generic species list — every recipe here has lived in a 38 L tank on our shop floor at Gensou Aquascaping, 5 Everton Park, Singapore for at least three months before making it in. The 10 gallon (38 L) footprint is generous enough for genuine schools but tight enough that stocking mistakes become visible fast. We list what works, what looks tempting but does not, and realistic SGD prices from the usual Singapore sources.

The Rules Before the Recipes

At 38 L in Singapore’s 28-30°C ambient, you are bioload-limited more than space-limited. Target one small fish per 3-4 L as an upper ceiling, not a goal. Avoid any species whose adult size exceeds 6 cm. Avoid aggressive species that need territory — cichlids above 8 cm, most gouramis, angelfish, and any plecos other than the smallest Otocinclus.

Recipe 1: The Classic Nano Community

10 chili rasboras (Boraras brigittae, 2 cm) plus 6 pygmy corydoras (Corydoras pygmaeus, 2.5 cm) plus 10 Neocaridina shrimp. This is the default we recommend. Total cost in Singapore: SGD 35-55 for fish, SGD 25-45 for shrimp. All soft-water tolerant, all active across different tank levels, no aggression. Pairs beautifully with a planted low-tech nano planted tank.

Recipe 2: Betta-Centred Peaceful Setup

1 male betta (Betta splendens) plus 6 pygmy corydoras plus 10 amano or Neocaridina shrimp. Works if the betta is a calm individual — test by observing at the shop. Skip long-finned halfmoons in a tank with strong flow. Our betta temperament selection guide walks through evaluating fish before buying.

Recipe 3: South American Biotope

A pair of Apistogramma borellii (male 5 cm, female 3.5 cm) plus 8 ember tetras (Hyphessobrycon amandae) plus 6 otocinclus (if the tank is mature and biofilm-rich). Requires pH 6.0-6.8, which means peat or tannin sources. Pressurised CO2 optional but helpful for the plants. Expect SGD 45-70 for the borellii pair.

Recipe 4: Livebearer Beginner Setup

A trio of endler guppies (1 male, 2 females) plus 6 pygmy corydoras plus 10 Neocaridina. Endlers (Poecilia wingei, 3 cm males) are smaller and more colourful than fancy guppies, and they stay proportionate in 38 L. Remineralise PUB tap to gH 8 kH 4 for long-term health.

Recipe 5: Shrimp-First Minimalist

Skip fish entirely. 30-50 Neocaridina or 20-30 Caridina (Crystal Red or Taiwan Bee). The Caridina route needs active soil, RO water remineralised with Salty Shrimp GH+, and TDS held at 120-140. Expensive per shrimp (SGD 4-25 each) but the most visually satisfying nano option. See Caridina shrimp parameters for Singapore.

Species We Frequently Advise Against

Common goldfish and fancy goldfish: bioload catastrophe, needs 75+ L. Angelfish: vertical space need exceeds 30 cm. Three-spot gourami: aggressive at adult size. Neon tetras: counter-intuitively delicate, prefer 50+ L shoals of 10+. Dwarf puffer (Carinotetraodon travancoricus): viable singly but nips shrimp and slow fish. Ghost shrimp from feeder tanks: often carry disease.

Acclimation for Singapore-Shipped Fish

Drip acclimate for 45-60 minutes at 2 drops per second. PUB tap in most shops is similar across the island, but fish flown in from Thailand or Indonesia have been in much softer water. Quarantine new arrivals for 2 weeks in a bare 19 L bin if you already have an established tank — prazipro and a mild salt dip prevent 90% of common parasites.

Feeding the Mix

Vary protein sources. Hikari Micro Pellets (SGD 12) for surface feeders, Fluval Bug Bites for mid-water, sinking wafers for cories, shrimp-specific food like GlasGarten Shrimp Dinner (SGD 18) for the invertebrates. Feed once daily, pause one day a week. Overfeeding is the single biggest cause of 38 L tank failure in Singapore — warm water accelerates waste breakdown, and NO3 climbs fast.

Target Water Parameters

Temperature 25-28°C (ambient in HDB without aircon will push 29°C — acceptable but not ideal). pH 6.5-7.6. NO3 under 20 ppm. TDS 150-250. Test weekly for the first month.

Signs You Are Overstocked

Fish gasping at surface in the morning (dissolved oxygen crashed overnight). Persistent NO3 above 40 ppm despite weekly water changes. Algae rebound within 3 days of cleaning. Shrimp disappearing. If any of these happen, rehome fish rather than doubling down on equipment.

Singapore Sourcing Summary

C328 Clementi stocks chili rasboras (SGD 1.50 each), ember tetras (SGD 1.80), pygmy cories (SGD 3-4), and Neocaridina grade A (SGD 2.50-4). Y618 Aquatic Serangoon North has a stronger apistogramma range — borellii pairs at SGD 45-65, cacatuoides SGD 35. Green Chapter Jurong West is where we send customers for Caridina shrimp (Crystal Red SA grade from SGD 8, Taiwan Bee from SGD 25). Iwarna Aquafarm on weekends has wild-type Boraras and wild-caught otocinclus (SGD 6-9 each). Nature Aquarium Gallery on Thomson Road has premium betta (halfmoon show quality SGD 35-120). Polyart does not sell livestock but stocks the glass you will put them in. Carousell is usable for shrimp culls from local breeders (SGD 1-3 each). Shopee is risky for livestock — use only for food, conditioners and test kits.
