This 29 gallon fish tank setup guide covers the classic 30 x 12 x 18 in footprint — a 110 L starter that offers more swim length than a 25 but fits the same stand class. Gensou Aquascaping at 5 Everton Park recommends the 29 as the single best “first real tank” for HDB hobbyists who want community fish in a stable, forgiving volume.

Why the 29 Gallon Is a Starter Classic

At 110 L filled, the 29 gallon gives meaningful parameter stability — 20% more buffer than a 25, enough that a forgotten water change doesn’t crash pH overnight. The 76 cm length is also the minimum for a proper school of tetras to display natural swim patterns.

Standard Dimensions

30 x 12 x 18 in (76 x 30 x 46 cm). Filled weight approximately 135 kg. Fits on any 80 cm wide cabinet. Watch the 76 cm length when measuring HDB corner placements — it’s 15 cm longer than a 25 gallon and can overshoot narrow console tops.

Filtration Sizing

Target 6-8x turnover, so 660-880 L/h. Eheim 2215 (SGD 240 at C328 Clementi), Oase BioMaster 250 (SGD 380 at Green Chapter Jurong West), or the budget SunSun 603B canister (SGD 95 on Shopee, 700 L/h) all fit. For sumped or hang-on-back builds, AquaClear 70 (SGD 95) with sponge prefilter handles lightly stocked community loads.

Heater Choice in Singapore

Ambient 28-30°C means an aircon household running 24°C needs a 150 W heater on tank; non-aircon flats need 50 W for overnight buffering only, or skip the heater entirely if ambient stays above 26°C. Eheim Jager 150 W at SGD 85 is our default. Always pair with a digital controller.

Substrate and Hardscape

For fish-focused builds: inert black sand (SGD 18/5 kg Polyart) or Seachem Flourite Black (SGD 52/7 kg C328). For planted: ADA Amazonia v2 (SGD 48/3 L) at 4 cm depth — 12 L needed. Hardscape: one Seiryu triangle at the 1/3 point, SGD 6/kg from Nature Aquarium Gallery Thomson Road.

Cycling with PUB Water

Fishless cycle with Dr Tim’s ammonium chloride to 2 ppm, dose Seachem Stability daily. Expect 3-4 weeks at 28-29°C ambient. Test ammonia, nitrite, nitrate every other day. Our fishless cycling step by step covers dosing and troubleshooting stall-outs.

Lighting Options

For low-tech fish-focused: Chihiros A601 Plus (SGD 180) or Week Aqua P600 (SGD 180). Planted builds with CO2: Chihiros WRGB II 60 (SGD 320) or Twinstar 600EA (SGD 380). Both span the 76 cm length with a 60 cm fixture — you’ll see minor dark zones 8 cm from each end glass.

Stocking Blueprint

Balanced community: 15 neon tetras (Paracheirodon innesi), 8 Corydoras sterbai, 1 pair dwarf gourami (Trichogaster lalius), 6 Otocinclus, 10 Amano shrimp. Total under 90% stocking ceiling for a cycled 110 L. See our community fish compatibility chart.

Avoid in 29 Gallons

Silver dollars, plecos over 10 cm adult, tiger barbs in small groups, goldfish, and angelfish (need 51 cm height — this is 46 cm).

Aquascape Composition

76 cm length suits a triangular or double-island composition. One hero stone at the 1/3 point, supporting rocks at the 2/3, midground Cryptocoryne, background Vallisneria nana or Rotala rotundifolia. See aquascape composition rules for planning.

Maintenance Routine

Weekly 25-30% water change (27-33 L), match temperature, dechlorinate. Rinse filter floss monthly, media every 6 weeks in tank water only. Test nitrate weekly — target under 20 ppm. Glass magnet (SGD 18) plus a razor scraper handle algae film.
