Best Fish for 50 Gallon Tank Guide: Proven Stocking

This best fish for 50 gallon tank guide runs through species that actually thrive in a 91 x 46 x 48 cm (~189 L) planted tank in Singapore conditions. At Gensou Aquascaping, 5 Everton Park, 50 gallons is the format we recommend for first-time serious aquascapers — the 46 cm front-to-back depth handles larger schools and bottom dwellers that 55 gallons cramp.

Why the 50 Footprint Matters

91 cm of length is enough for a 20-fish school to spread out without wall-bouncing. 46 cm of depth gives corydoras, loaches and bottom-feeding rainbows proper territory. The result is that you can stock more peacefully than the classic 55.

Schooling Mid-Water Fish

20 cardinal tetras, 20 rummynose tetras, or 25 neon tetras form a tight moving cloud at this footprint. Harlequin rasboras (15-20) are the hardiest for Singapore water. Ember tetras (25-30) suit planted jungles. SGD $2.50-$4 per fish at C328 Clementi.

Centrepiece Options

One angelfish pair, a trio of pearl gouramis, one Bolivian ram pair, or a single apistogramma cacatuoides harem (1M, 2-3F). Dwarf gouramis work for colour but carry gourami iridovirus risk — source carefully. Our dwarf gourami health notes have details.

Bottom Dwellers

46 cm depth is loach-friendly. 12 sterbai corydoras, 10 kuhli loaches, or a pair of hillstream loaches (cooler bias — check seasonal temps). Whiptail catfish add character without outgrowing the tank.

Shrimp and Snails

15-20 Amano shrimp for algae duty, nerite snails (5-6), mystery snails if you like the visual. Cherry shrimp colonies work only if centrepiece fish are non-predatory — pearl gouramis tolerate them, angelfish will not. More in our shrimp-safe fish list.

Community Combinations

Combo A: 20 cardinal + 10 sterbai + 1 angel pair + 15 amano. Combo B: 20 rummynose + 8 kuhli + 3 pearl gourami + nerites. Combo C: 25 ember tetra + 12 pygmy cory + 1 apistogramma harem + cherry shrimp colony. Our 50 gallon stocking ideas has more.

Species to Avoid

Oscars (grow to 30 cm), silver dollars (schooling and huge), bala sharks (55 cm max adults), common plecos (45 cm). Singapore LFS will sell you 5 cm juveniles — they mature fast in 29°C water. Also skip tiger barbs if mixing with long-finned species.

Singapore-Specific Considerations

28-30°C ambient favours species from equatorial Asia and the Amazon. Discus is possible in a 50 but demands 30°C, RO blending and daily water changes. Plan ahead with our discus Singapore primer.

Planting to Support Stocking

Heavy plant mass (vallisneria, crypts, anubias, stem midground) lifts biofilter capacity and lets you push toward 1.5 cm fish per litre without nitrate spikes. Weekly 40% water changes remain mandatory regardless.
