This 50 gallon fish tank setup complete guide covers the 36 x 18 x 19 in (91 x 46 x 48 cm, ~189 L) format that serious aquascapers at Gensou Aquascaping, 5 Everton Park prefer over the more common 55 gallon. The trade is simple: you give up a foot of length, you gain 5 inches of front-to-back depth — and depth is where real aquascape composition lives.

Why 50 Gallons Over 55

55 gallons are 4 ft long but only 13 in (33 cm) deep. 50 gallons are shorter at 91 cm but 46 cm deep — enough for true foreground-midground-background layering. For Nature Aquarium style scaping, the 50 wins every time.

Floor Load and Placement

Filled weight is roughly 230 kg. Against an HDB load-bearing wall, this is safe. Avoid flat centres of large rooms. Concrete slab floors (common in newer BTOs) handle it without question; timber subfloors (older shophouses) need a load check.

Tank, Stand and Bracing

A 91 cm rimless tank with 10-12 mm starphire front panel is the standard premium spec. Budget builds run 8 mm float glass with black silicone — fine, but less visually clean. Stands should be steel-frame or 18 mm marine plywood; particle board fails within 3 years in Singapore humidity. Our aquarium stand buying guide covers specifics.

Filtration Targets

Aim for 5-7x turnover — 1000-1300 L/h. Eheim Classic 600 (SGD $280), Oase BioMaster 600 (SGD $520) or Sunsun HW-704B (SGD $150) hit this. Spray bars across the rear glass distribute flow without whipping plants.

Lighting for Depth

48 cm water column is moderate. A Chihiros WRGB II 60 or Week Aqua P600 at 70-80% intensity grows demanding carpets like HC Cuba and Monte Carlo. CO2 at 30 ppm is needed for stem plant diversity.

Substrate and Hardscape

ADA Amazonia Version 2 — two 9 L bags — gives a 6 cm bed sloping back to 10 cm. The 46 cm depth lets you build genuine back-of-tank elevation. Dragon stone or Seiryu at 6-9 kg total, plus 2-3 kg of spider wood. More depth means more hardscape weight capacity. See hardscape composition for 50 gal.

Cycling and Water Chemistry

Silent cycle with dry start (3-4 weeks) for planted, or fishless ammonia cycle (4-6 weeks) for stock-ready. PUB tap water pH 7.2-7.6, GH 4-6 — suitable for most tropical community species without remineralisation.

Stocking the Footprint

The 46 cm depth means corydoras and loaches have real floor space. Suggested mix: 20 cardinal tetras, 10 sterbai corydoras, 2 pearl gouramis, 10 amano shrimp. Or go South American: 1 angelfish pair, 15 rummynose, 6 sterbai. Full options in our 50 gallon stocking ideas.

Temperature Control

28-31°C is the Singapore range. No heater needed. A clip fan evaporates 1-2 L/day but drops water 1-2°C — budget for daily top-ups with RO or dechlorinated tap. Our tropical tank cooling piece has more.

Maintenance Schedule

30-40% water changes weekly. Glass cleaning fortnightly with a magnetic scraper. Filter media rinse monthly in discarded tank water. Trim stems and carpet every 2-3 weeks. Budget 90 minutes weekly.
