100 Gallon Fish Tank Setup Guide: Complete Build
This 100 gallon fish tank setup guide (379 L) covers the transition into genuine “big tank” territory where planning every step end-to-end is no longer optional. At Gensou Aquascaping, 5 Everton Park, we treat 100 gallons as the threshold where HDB floor-load conversations become serious, where water changes demand plumbing thought, and where filtration redundancy stops being a luxury. Expect a filled weight of 470-520 kg including substrate, rockwork and cabinet.
Standard 100 Gallon Dimensions
Common 100-gallon rectangulars ship at 60 x 18 x 21 in (152 x 46 x 53 cm) or 72 x 18 x 19 in (183 x 46 x 48 cm) for “long” variants. The 60 in format is the Singapore favourite — fits most condo living walls, clears service lifts diagonally and still delivers enormous aquascape real estate. Measure your doorways: 152 cm needs 85 cm door clearance minimum, lifts need 160 cm interior diagonal.
Floor Load Planning for HDB and Condo
A filled 100-gallon concentrates about 720-800 kg/m² under a typical 152 x 50 cm stand footprint. HDB’s nominal 244 kg/m² live load is conservative — spread across a properly engineered stand, 100 gallons is routinely fine in HDB flats when sited near load-bearing walls or across joists. Condos with screed or slab floors handle 100-gallon tanks without any structural concern. Landed homes on concrete slabs are effectively unlimited.
Stand Construction for 100 Gallons
Commission welded steel with 40 x 40 mm top frame, 30 x 30 mm uprights, mid-span legs and powder coating. Polyart quotes SGD 580-720 for a 152 cm cabinet; Anchor Aquatics runs similar. Verify the top frame is dead flat with a torpedo level before accepting delivery — a 152 cm span is where sagging defects become costly. Sit on 5 mm EVA mat and a 12 mm plywood spreader plate on uneven HDB tiles.
Filtration Strategy and Redundancy
Target 5-6x turnover (1,900-2,300 L/h) minimum. For 100 gallons we recommend twin canisters as standard, not optional: an Oase BioMaster 850 (SGD 720) paired with a Fluval 407 (SGD 420) gives failover during servicing and distributes flow from opposite ends. Pre-filter both intakes with sponge covers; add a surface skimmer for the biofilm that inevitably forms in aircon rooms.
Lighting and CO2 for Planted Builds
A 152 cm span needs either twin Chihiros WRGB II Pro 90 (SGD 580 each) or a single Chihiros Vivid 2 Pro at 150 cm (SGD 820). For CO2, a 2 kg bottle (SGD 85 fill at Sun Singapore Industrial Gases) plus a CO2Art regulator (SGD 240) and ceramic diffuser delivers medium-light growth. Bubble rate 3-4 per second, dropping pH by 1.0 at lights-on versus lights-off.
Heating, Chilling and Electrical Planning
Aircon homes often need a 300 W titanium heater (SGD 95); non-aircon rooms exceeding 30°C benefit from a Hailea HC-250A chiller (SGD 480) set to 26°C for discus or cool-water tetras. Total sustained draw runs 300-500 W for planted builds, 600-900 W with chiller — split across two 13 A outlets on separate breakers to avoid tripping during chiller compressor start.
Substrate and Hardscape at Scale
Budget 40-60 L of substrate: 45 L ADA Amazonia v2 (SGD 720) for full planted, or 30 L inert sand plus 15 L Fluval Stratum for mixed builds. Hardscape scales up too — 35-50 kg of Seiryu stone (SGD 6-8/kg) and 3-5 pieces of Malaysian driftwood. Sketch the composition first; 152 cm is long enough for two focal points at golden-ratio positions (58 cm and 94 cm from one end).
Cycling and Water Chemistry
Dose Dr Tim’s Ammonium Chloride to 2 ppm, seed with mature media, run Seachem Stability for 10 days and test daily with API master kit. At 27-28°C tank temperature, 100-gallon builds cycle in 20-30 days. PUB tap’s soft GH 2-4 and pH 7.0-7.2 suits soft-water tropicals straight away; buffer to GH 10-12 for rift-lake cichlids using Seachem Malawi/Victoria.
Stocking at 379 Litres
Three proven rosters: planted Amazon with 6 angels, 40 cardinal tetras, 15 sterbai corydoras, a pair of blue rams and 20 Amano shrimp; rainbowfish showpiece with 15 Boeseman’s, 15 dwarf neon, 20 Congo tetras and 10 SAE; Malawi mbuna with 18 mbuna across three species (yellow labs, cobalt zebra, rusty) at 2:4 male-female ratios. Stocking beyond 80% of calculated capacity invites ammonia spikes.
Water Change Plumbing and Logistics
100 L weekly water changes are non-negotiable; manual bucketing is miserable. Run a Python siphon to the kitchen sink — 30-40 minute round trip — or install a permanent drain-and-fill kit with a Whale-pump and food-grade 1/2 in tubing (SGD 180 materials). HDB flats with no accessible tap use twin 40 L barrels on a trolley. Temperature-match to within 1°C, pre-dose Prime directly into the tank before the refill arrives.
Singapore Sourcing at the 100-Gallon Scale
Custom glass: Qian Hu at SGD 820-980 in 12 mm float, starphire upgrade SGD 1,180-1,380, rimless starphire with euro brace SGD 1,480-1,780. Stand and cabinet: Polyart SGD 580-720. Livestock: Iwarna for quarantined community fish, Y618 for bulk schooling species, Nature Aquarium Gallery for premium angels and plants, Kwang Yang for discus. Delivery with install typically SGD 150-220 all-in.
