Best Fish for 100 Gallon Tank Guide: Stocking Plans

At 379 L, a 100-gallon tank crosses the line from large community aquarium into genuine display territory — the kind of build where centrepiece species and serious shoals coexist without the compromises smaller footprints force. This best fish for 100 gallon tank guide draws on stocking rosters we have tested at Gensou Aquascaping, 5 Everton Park, across Amazon community, African rift-lake, oddball and monster-tank builds. The 152 x 46 x 53 cm footprint unlocks new species that smaller tanks simply cannot house responsibly.

What Changes at 100 Gallons

Two things. First, 152 cm of swimming length supports fish that travel — clown loaches, silver dollars, Geophagus, even a juvenile oscar with upgrade plans. Second, 379 L of dilution means bioload spikes from feeding or a dead fish no longer threaten the cycle. You can stock to about 85% of calculated capacity without the stress that tighter tanks demand.

Amazon Planted Community

Our most-recommended 100-gallon stocking: 6 angelfish (Pterophyllum scalare), 40 cardinal tetras (Paracheirodon axelrodi), 15 sterbai corydoras (Corydoras sterbai), a pair of blue rams (Mikrogeophagus ramirezi), 20 Amano shrimp and a single bristlenose pleco (Ancistrus sp.). PUB soft water is ready-made for this roster; expect SGD 380-480 from Iwarna Aquafarm with quarantine.

Discus Show Tank

100 gallons comfortably houses 8-10 adult discus (Symphysodon sp.) — twice the rule-of-thumb 10 gal per fish because dilution allows tighter social grouping. Pair with 20 rummynose tetras, 12 sterbai corydoras and a school of 6 otocinclus. Target GH 2-4, KH 2, pH 6.4-6.8 at 29°C — PUB water is near-perfect straight from the tap. Forrest’s Discus breeds in Singapore at SGD 35-120 per fish depending on strain.

African Rift Lake Malawi Build

For a full mbuna display, stock 20 mbuna across four species — yellow labs (Labidochromis caeruleus), cobalt blue zebra (Metriaclima callainos), red zebra (Metriaclima estherae) and rusty cichlid (Iodotropheus sprengerae). Maintain 2:4 male-female ratio per species to disperse aggression. Remineralise PUB water with Seachem Malawi/Victoria buffer to GH 10-12, KH 8-10, pH 7.8-8.2. Rockwork-heavy aquascape with minimal plants; aragonite sand substrate.

Tanganyikan Community

Tanganyika offers more behavioural variety per tank than Malawi. Stock 20 Cyprichromis leptosoma “jumbo” in open water, a pair of Neolamprologus brichardi, a trio of Julidochromis regani and 10 Neolamprologus multifasciatus in shell beds. Rockwork plus 5 cm aragonite sand, GH 10-12, KH 8-10 remineralised from PUB tap. Iwarna and Polyart handle Tanganyikan species on pre-order — expect SGD 450-650 for the full roster.

Rainbowfish and Shoal Tank

152 cm of swim length is where rainbowfish finally get to cruise. Stock 15 Boeseman’s (Melanotaenia boesemani), 15 dwarf neon (Melanotaenia praecox), 10 turquoise (Melanotaenia lacustris), 20 Congo tetras (Phenacogrammus interruptus) and 10 Siamese algae eaters (Crossocheilus oblongus). Bright lighting and moderate current bring out male colour; feed rotating Fluval Bug Bites, New Life Spectrum and frozen bloodworms.

Central American Cichlid Setup

For bolder behaviour without water chemistry demands, 100 gallons fits a pair of firemouths (Thorichthys meeki), a pair of convicts (Cryptoheros nigrofasciatus), 8 Buenos Aires tetras and a sailfin pleco. Expect cichlid spawning drama — remove fry at 2 cm for store credit at Y618 or sale on Carousell.

Oddball and Monster Tank Options

If you prefer single-species spectacle: 15 silver dollars (Metynnis hypsauchen) with 2 angelfish as dithers, a group of 8 Severum juveniles (Heros efasciatus), or 6 clown loaches (Chromobotia macracanthus) with upgrade plans to 180+ gallons by year three. For a serious predator build, a single juvenile oscar (Astronotus ocellatus) or a pair of Jack Dempseys — but factor the upgrade path upfront.

Geophagus and Sand-Sifter Showpiece

A dedicated sand-sifter tank with 8 Geophagus tapajos “red head”, 25 rummynose tetras as dithers and a plecostomus delivers mesmerising bottom behaviour. Use pool-filter sand or very fine inert gravel — ADA Amazonia capped with sand works. Avoid sharp-grained substrate that damages gill rakers during sifting; remove any sharp wood chips from driftwood before installing.

Stocking Density and Feeding

Stock to 85% of calculated capacity — roughly 150 cm of slim adult fish equivalent. Feed twice daily, small portions, rotating four foods across the week to maintain nutrient diversity. In Singapore’s warm 27-29°C water, fish metabolise faster than temperate setups — small frequent meals beat one large serving. Fast one day per week for digestive rest.

Sourcing and Quarantine at Scale

Iwarna Aquafarm, Nature Aquarium Gallery and Y618 cover most community species; Kwang Yang Aquarium and Forrest’s Discus for premium discus; Polyart for wild-caught rift-lake and Geophagus on pre-order. Run a 60 L quarantine bin with mature sponge filter for two weeks per batch — prophylactic praziquantel, metronidazole and levamisole rotate depending on origin. Skipping quarantine at 100 gallons can cost SGD 400+ in replacement livestock after one parasite outbreak.
