HDB Reef Tank Space and Load Planning Guide: Floor and Power
A 200-litre reef plus rock and cabinet weighs nearly 350 kilograms — the equivalent of three adults standing on one square metre of HDB flooring. Smart HDB reef tank planning begins long before the tank is bought, with floor load, power circuit capacity, room temperature, plumbing access and noise tolerance all assessed. Gensou Aquascaping at 5 Everton Park has helped Singapore HDB and condo reefers thread these constraints for two decades, and the planning differs sharply from a freshwater build.
Floor Load Capacity
HDB BTO and resale flats are designed for a uniform live load of 1.5 kPa, equivalent to 150 kg per square metre. A 200-litre reef on a 90 x 45 cm cabinet footprint exerts roughly 850 kg per square metre — well within structural capacity but heavily concentrated. Position the cabinet against a load-bearing wall and use a thick, levelled mat underneath. Anything above 400 litres benefits from spreader plates or a wider stand to disperse load.
Best Tank Locations
Avoid west-facing windows where afternoon sun pushes ambient temperatures past 32°C and triggers algae blooms. Living rooms work best because air-conditioning runs longest there, keeping room temperature at 24-26°C and reducing chiller workload. Bedrooms become problematic because pump and skimmer noise carry at night. Kitchens add cooking aerosols that coat optics within months.
Power Circuit Audit
A typical mid-range reef draws 350-500 watts continuously and peaks at 800 watts when heaters and chiller cycle together. HDB sockets share a 13-amp circuit, so plugging the tank, microwave and air fryer onto the same circuit trips the breaker. Dedicate one wall socket exclusively to the tank, and consider an electrician adding a separate circuit for builds over 250 litres. Browse surge-protected power gear in the aquarium equipment range.
Chiller and Cooling Strategy
Singapore ambient sits at 28-32°C, while reefs target 25-26°C. A chiller is non-negotiable for displays over 100 litres unless the room is air-conditioned 24/7. Hailea HC-300A chillers handle 200 litres at SGD 580-700 and dump heat into the room — meaning the chiller’s heat output raises ambient temperature by 1-2°C, which the air conditioner then has to remove. Plan on roughly SGD 25-40 monthly added to the chiller plus aircon utility bill.
Plumbing and Water Access
HDB kitchen taps sit 3-5 metres from typical living-room tank locations. Run a permanent RODI line via a long polytube to a wall-mounted unit if water changes will exceed 80 litres weekly. Many condo reefers install a dedicated tap inside the storeroom feeding the RODI. A water-change pump pair (one for waste, one for new water) saves 30 minutes per change at SGD 180.
Noise Budget
HDB walls transmit return pump hum at 45-55 dB to neighbours and partners. A sumped reef in an open-front cabinet broadcasts pump noise into the room; a closed cabinet with sound-damping foam drops it 8-12 dB. Skimmers tend to gurgle at startup and bedtime. Tunze and Ecotech wavemakers run quieter than budget alternatives. Build noise tolerance into your gear selection.
Tank Footprint Planning
4-room HDB flats typically allow tank footprints up to 120 x 60 cm without dominating the living space. 5-room and executive flats accommodate 150 cm displays. Anything larger requires a dedicated study room conversion. Measure cabinet height plus tank height plus light fixture height — the total often exceeds 180 cm, which clashes with the standard 2.6m HDB ceiling. Browse cabinet options in the tanks and cabinets range.
Insurance and Drip Containment
HDB tile floors crack under sustained dampness and stain from saltwater drips. Place a dedicated drip tray in the cabinet beneath the sump, and lay a 10mm rubber mat under the cabinet itself. Standard home contents insurance often excludes water damage from aquariums — check policy wording before installation. Saltwater corrodes steel cabinet fittings within a year if not sealed.
Move-Out and Resale Considerations
Reef tanks are heavy, fragile, and difficult to relocate when an HDB lease ends or you upgrade to a condo. Plan tank position so it can stay through future renovations. Reef-keeping in a five-year HDB stay differs from a fifteen-year setup. Build flexibility into the layout and avoid hard-plumbing the tank to drains or feed lines that are hard to reverse.
