Dennerle Nano Cube Tank Line Review: 10 to 60 Litre Models

Nano tanks dominate the entry-level scene because Singapore HDB flats simply do not have room for a 4-foot showpiece. The Dennerle Nano Cube series has been one of the most consistent ranges in the segment for over a decade, and the latest revision tightened the silicone work, upgraded the inline filter, and added a more aggressive LED clip. This guide from Gensou Aquascaping at 5 Everton Park walks through every size in the line — 10L, 20L, 30L, 40L and 60L — and explains which one suits which type of build.

Build Quality and Glass Specification

All Nano Cubes ship with low-iron float glass, not Optiwhite, but the clarity is a clear step up from generic Chinese cube tanks at the same price point. Silicone seams are thin, even and grey-tinted rather than black, which softens the visual edge inside an aquascape. Glass thickness ranges from 4 mm on the 10L to 6 mm on the 60L. The bundled Styrofoam base mat compensates for HDB countertops that are rarely truly level.

10 Litre Cube: Pico Builds and Desktop Scapes

The 10L cube measures 25 x 25 x 25 cm and is the entry point. It ships with a small clip filter and a basic LED that frankly underperforms — most scapers swap the lighting for an upgrade from the aquarium equipment range within weeks. The volume is a reality check: 10 litres is too small for shrimp colonies and only suits a single male betta or a tiny cherry colony of 5-6. Retail in Singapore sits at SGD 70-85 for the bare tank.

20 Litre Cube: The Shrimp Sweet Spot

At 30 x 30 x 25 cm, the 20L cube is where the line starts making sense. It is the smallest size that can comfortably hold a Crystal Red Shrimp colony of 30+ animals, and the proportions photograph beautifully. The bundled corner filter is undersized — pair the tank with a sponge filter instead. Pricing runs SGD 95-115 bare, or SGD 145-165 in the complete bundle with light and filter.

30 Litre Cube: Best All-Rounder

The 30L (35 x 35 x 25 cm) is our most-recommended size from the range. Volume is generous enough for a small school of ember tetras or a sorority of female bettas, the footprint allows real aquascaping with hardscape, and the bundled equipment becomes adequate rather than a placeholder. SGD 130-150 bare, SGD 190-220 bundled. Pair it with Dennerle Scapers Soil 4L and you have a complete shrimp-ready foundation.

40 Litre Cube: Forest Scape Friendly

At 40 x 40 x 32 cm, the 40L gains useful height for Vallisneria and Cryptocoryne backdrops. This is where the Nano Cube starts feeling like a proper aquascape rather than a desk decoration. Singapore retail is SGD 165-195 bare. The bundled filter handles the volume but is still on the cusp — heavy livestock loads warrant an upgrade to a small canister or a quality Seachem Tidal 35 hang-on-back.

60 Litre Cube: The Largest Sibling

The 60L (38 x 38 x 43 cm) is technically still in the nano category but starts behaving like a proper tank. The taller silhouette suits stem-plant Dutch-style aquascapes, and the volume is enough for a community of small tetras with a centrepiece dwarf gourami. Bundled filtration becomes inadequate at this scale; budget for an Eheim Classic 2215 straight away. Retail is SGD 230-280 bare.

Bundled vs Bare Pricing

Dennerle sells bare cubes and “Complete Plus” bundles with LED clip, internal filter, soil and conditioner. The bundle premium runs SGD 50-70. For the 10L and 20L, the bundle is reasonable for absolute beginners. For the 40L and 60L, buy bare and assemble premium equipment from the rest of the catalogue — bundled gear is undersized for those volumes.

Honest Weak Points

Bundled lights are the weakest element across all sizes. The clip-on form factor pinches back glass, the spectrum is mediocre, and PAR is too low for demanding plants. Stand support is your problem — Nano Cubes ship without cabinets, so plan for a Carousell-built unit, an IKEA Kallax for smaller sizes, or a cabinet from the cabinet range. A filled 60L weighs 80-90 kg, so check load ratings.

Where to Buy and Who Should Pick What

Gensou carries the 20L, 30L and 60L at 5 Everton Park, with the 10L and 40L on indent. C328 Clementi and Polyart stock the 30L and 60L most consistently. Avoid Lazada listings under SGD 100 for the 30L — those are parallel imports without warranty. For desktop bettas: 20L. First-time aquascapers: 30L. Shrimp breeding: 30L or 40L. Ambitious nano aquascapes: 40L or 60L. Skip the 10L unless space is genuinely limited.
