Best Shrimp Tank Substrate Buying Guide: pH Buffering Soils
Picking the right substrate for a shrimp tank is the single most important hardware decision a Singapore shrimp keeper makes — more important than the filter, the lighting or the chiller. The best shrimp tank substrate for Caridina species buffers pH down to 5.5-6.5, locks in soft GH 4-6 and KH 0-1 water, and lasts 12-24 months before needing replacement. Neocaridina shrimp tolerate inert substrates, but Crystal Reds, Taiwan Bees and Tigers need active buffering soils. This guide from Gensou Aquascaping at 5 Everton Park ranks five soils we stock and trust, with TDS targets, lifespan and SGD pricing tiers across local reef and aquascape shops.
Pick 1: ADA Amazonia II Powder (SGD 65-80 per 3L)
ADA Amazonia II is the gold standard for Caridina shrimp tanks. The powder grade buffers pH to 5.8-6.2, drops KH to near-zero within 48 hours, and supplies humic acids that shrimp thrive in. Lifespan in active mode is 12-18 months. The trade-off: an aggressive ammonia spike during the first 4-6 weeks of cycling — never add shrimp during this window. Pair with a remineraliser like Salty Shrimp Bee Mineral GH+ to set GH 4-5. Available in the substrate range at Gensou.
Pick 2: Tropica Aquasoil Powder (SGD 55-70 per 3L)
Tropica Aquasoil Powder is the milder buffering alternative. pH lands around 6.2-6.5 within two weeks, KH drops slowly over six weeks rather than crashing immediately. Ammonia release is gentler than ADA — usable for shrimp in 3-4 weeks rather than 6-8. Lifespan is 18-24 months in shrimp-only tanks with low bioload. Better fit than Amazonia for keepers who want softer parameters without the harshness of a full Caridina pH crash. Pair with the Tropica Aquasoil Powder pack.
Pick 3: Akadama Double-Red (SGD 25-35 per 14L bag)
Akadama is the budget choice that actually works. Imported from Japan as a bonsai soil, double-red Akadama buffers pH to 6.0-6.5 and softens water. The trade-off versus aquasoils: shorter lifespan (8-12 months before structure breaks down to mud), no built-in nutrients, and inconsistent grain size. Singapore reefers and shrimp keepers source it through Carousell and Shopee at SGD 30 per 14L bag — roughly one-fifth the cost per litre versus ADA. Sieve before use to remove fines.
Pick 4: Fluval Stratum (SGD 35-50 per 4L)
Fluval Stratum is the safe-for-beginners pick. pH buffers gently to 6.5-6.8 — too high for serious Caridina but ideal for Neocaridina, Sulawesi and lower-grade Crystal Reds. Cycling is fast (2-3 weeks) and ammonia release is mild. Lifespan 18-24 months. The grain is slightly larger than aquasoil powder, which baby shrimp can navigate without getting trapped. Best fit for entry-level shrimp keepers running their first cherry shrimp colony in a 30L tank.
Pick 5: Dennerle Scapers Soil Mini (SGD 40-55 per 4L)
Dennerle Scapers Soil sits between Tropica and ADA in buffering aggression. pH targets 6.2-6.5, KH drops to 1-2, lifespan 18-20 months. The mini grain size is friendly to baby shrimp. Dennerle’s iron-rich profile encourages plant growth alongside shrimp, making it a natural fit for shrimp-and-stem-plant blended scapes. Available at Gensou and most Singapore aquascape retailers in the Scapers Soil Mini listing.
How to Choose: Caridina Versus Neocaridina
Caridina (Crystal Red, Taiwan Bee, Tiger): pick ADA Amazonia II or Dennerle Scapers Soil. Target TDS 80-150, GH 4-6, KH 0-1, pH 5.8-6.5. Neocaridina (Cherry, Yellow, Blue Dream): pick Fluval Stratum, inert sand, or Akadama. Target TDS 200-300, GH 6-8, KH 3-6, pH 7.0-7.5. Mixing species in a buffered Caridina tank slowly kills Neocaridina; mixing in a hard-water Neocaridina tank kills Caridina faster.
Remineraliser Pairing and Water Source
Active substrates need pure water input — RODI is mandatory for Caridina, optional for Neocaridina. Singapore PUB tap water is usable for Neocaridina if treated with a quality conditioner. Caridina keepers must use RODI from a five-stage filter (SGD 250-450 from local reef shops). Remineralise RODI with Salty Shrimp Bee Mineral GH+ for Caridina (target GH 5, KH 0-1) or GH/KH+ for Neocaridina (target GH 6, KH 3).
Lifespan Reality and Replacement Cadence
Active aquasoils exhaust their buffering capacity over 12-24 months. Signs the substrate is dying: pH drifting above 7.0, KH climbing, shrimp moulting issues, mortality during water changes. Plan a full substrate swap before the second birthday of the tank. Some keepers half-replace at 18 months to extend the buffer without disrupting biology. Budget SGD 60-90 per substrate refresh for a 30L tank.
Quick Decision Framework
Serious Caridina with parameter precision: ADA Amazonia II Powder. Caridina with milder cycling: Tropica or Dennerle. Beginner Neocaridina cherries: Fluval Stratum. Budget-driven backup tank: Akadama. The substrate is the foundation everything sits on — spend the right amount once and the tank rewards you for two years.
