Tap Water Aquarium FAQ: Singapore PUB Conditioner and Risk

Singapore PUB tap is among the cleanest municipal supplies in Asia and is safe for almost every freshwater aquarium once chloramine is neutralised. Typical readings are pH 7.0-8.0, GH 2-4, KH 1-2, TDS 80-110 ppm, and 1-3 ppm chloramine. This tap water aquarium faq from Gensou Aquascaping at 5 Everton Park breaks down what those numbers mean for your tank, and this guide answers the 10 questions Singapore aquarists ask most about using PUB tap.

Is PUB tap safe straight from the pipe?

Almost — except for chloramine. PUB switched to chloramine over chlorine in 2003, and unlike chlorine it does not gas off overnight. A drop of Seachem Prime per 4 litres or 2 ml of API Tap Water Conditioner per 40 litres breaks the bond and frees fish from gill irritation. Without conditioner, fish show flashing and gasping within 30 minutes.

What is the pH of Singapore tap water?

PUB tap fluctuates between pH 7.0 and 8.0 across the month. NEWater-blended supplies tend to sit higher; reservoir-fed estates lower. Test on the day of a water change rather than once a quarter. Soft tap with low KH means the pH can swing rapidly inside the tank — a common source of unexplained fish stress.

Do I need to age tap water before using it?

Not since the chloramine switch. Aging worked when chlorine was the disinfectant; chloramine is stable for days. Conditioner does the work in seconds. Aging is still useful for letting temperature equilibrate and for off-gassing CO2 if your tap water reads unusually low pH from carbonic acid.

When should I use bottled or RODI water?

RODI is needed for crystal shrimp (target TDS 100-130 with remineraliser), African Tanganyikan cichlids (need GH/KH boost beyond what tap provides), reef tanks, and discus on imported lines. For 95 per cent of community fish — tetras, rasboras, gouramis, bettas, corydoras — PUB tap with conditioner is fine. Bottled distilled water is overkill and expensive for top-ups; RODI units at SGD 80-300 pay back within months for shrimp keepers.

What about chloramine — is conditioner enough?

Standard dose neutralises 1-2 ppm. PUB occasionally spikes to 3 ppm during pipe flushing in older HDB estates — typically Toa Payoh, Bukit Merah and Queenstown. Double-dose Prime during these months, or run carbon block pre-filtration for 30 minutes before water hits the tank. Symptoms of under-dosing include reddened gill plates and surface gasping post-change.

Can I drink-tank-water-share from the kitchen?

Yes, but use cold-tap only. Hot-water lines pass through copper-soldered heaters that leach trace copper toxic to invertebrates. Run the cold tap for 30 seconds first to flush stagnant pipe water, then fill. Never use water from a softened-line if your block has a building-level water softener — sodium-treated water is fish-toxic.

Are PUB readings consistent month to month?

No. PUB publishes a Water Quality Report; values shift with reservoir source, NEWater blend ratio, and seasonal demand. GH typically sits 2-4 but creeps up after dry months. TDS swings 80-110 ppm. Test fortnightly during your first six months of fishkeeping to learn your block’s pattern, then quarterly after.

Is tap water OK for shrimp?

Neocaridina cherry shrimp tolerate PUB tap with conditioner. Caridina crystal and bee shrimp need RODI plus remineraliser — Salty Shrimp Bee Shrimp Mineral GH+ at 0.5g per litre to TDS 130. Tap GH 2-4 is too low and too variable for breeding-grade Caridina. Pick up the bottles from water care stock.

Will tap water harm planted tanks?

Soft PUB tap is excellent for most stem and rosette plants. Carpet plants like Hemianthus callitrichoides thrive at GH 4-6, which means dosing trace GH boost. Hard-water plants such as Vallisneria and most cryptocoryne handle the soft baseline fine. CO2-injected high-tech tanks require trace dosing regardless of source — tap alone does not provide enough iron or potassium.

What about kid-safety stories — is tap really clean?

PUB exceeds WHO drinking-water standards on every measured parameter. The only aquarium concern is chloramine; everything else is well within tropical fish tolerance. Customers who panic over “metals” or “pesticides” are usually fine — Singapore tap is statistically safer than most bottled spring waters sold in supermarkets.
