Description
There will be some browning leaf on the original packaging, it is normal
The Blyxa japonica originates in the nutrient rich shallow pools of water, swamps and slowly flowing rivers in East and South East Asia.
The plant has gained notoriety thanks to the late Takashi Amano and his aquarium works from the 90s.
Blyxa has a distinct grass-like appearance that moves easily in the circulating aquarium water creating a sense of dynamicity in comparison to other more robust plants.
Blyxa Japonica: a grass-like midground for SG tanks
Blyxa japonica is a longtime favourite in the local scene thanks to its Amano-era pedigree, and we love how its rosette of fine, grassy blades sways in the current to add movement that stiffer plants can’t. The light browning you may notice on incoming stock is simply transit stress and grows out quickly. Planted in clusters across the midground, it forms soft mounds that bridge the gap between low carpets and taller background stems.
This is a plant that rewards good substrate nutrition; it is a heavy root-feeder, so root tabs tucked beneath each clump pay off. Under strong light with CO2 the leaf tips blush bronze-red, which looks superb against green. In Singapore’s warm, soft water it grows steadily, and it readily sends out side shoots you can separate and replant to expand a stand without buying more.
