Description

Crinum Thaianum

Crinum thaianum from Thailand is a distinctive bulbous plant belonging to the lily family having 60-200 cm long leaves.
It is undemanding apart from the fact that it needs plenty of space. Plant so the top 2/3 of the bulb is visible, because otherwise the bulb tends to rot.
When the plant grows older it sometimes sends a flower stem up to the water surface with an aromatic, elegant lily flower.

Tropica Crinum Thaianum for tall display tanks

Crinum thaianum, the onion plant, is a bulbous lily-relative built for big aquariums, throwing out long, ribbon-like leaves that can climb to the surface and arch over a layout. We recommend it to local hobbyists running taller display tanks who want a dramatic, low-maintenance background plant. It is genuinely undemanding once settled, and being a bulb plant it shrugs off conditions that finicky stems would sulk in, asking mainly for space to spread.

The one rule that matters: plant it so the top third of the bulb sits proud of the substrate, because burying it fully invites rot. In our warm tap water it establishes slowly but reliably, and mature specimens occasionally send a fragrant flower stalk to the surface. Because the leaves are long and strappy, give it room away from delicate foreground plants it could shade out as it fills in.

Browse our background and live plants for companions, and we suggest reading the related Crinum calamistratum care guide and our 1000-litre showpiece aquascape ideas to plan around its eventual size.
