Description
Cryptocoryne Affinis
This Cryptocoryne has been kept in aquaria for over 50 years.
All Dennerle Cryptocorynes are grown emersed in our greenhouses.
Growth behaviour and leaf form differs significantly in plants growing in emersed and submerged states.
This is also true of Cryptocoryne affinis.
The typical olive-green to brown foliage only develops under water.
These plants make no great demands in terms of lighting, but optimum growth is achieved in slightly alkaline water. C. affinis comes highly recommended for cichlid aquaria with limestone.

Hints
Cryptocoryne affinis for the planted aquarium
Affinis is a long-standing aquarium favourite, kept by hobbyists for over fifty years, with handsome olive-green to brownish foliage that only develops its true submerged form once it settles underwater. These plants are grown emersed in the nursery, so expect the leaf shape and colour to change as the plant converts, which is completely normal. It makes a reliable, attractive midground crypt for a community tank.
It is not fussy about lighting, which is part of its appeal, but unusually for a crypt it does best in slightly alkaline, harder water and comes especially recommended for cichlid or limestone-influenced tanks. That is worth flagging in Singapore, where our tap water is soft and slightly acidic; a little buffering or some limestone hardscape will help it thrive. Like all crypts, expect some melt after planting before it re-roots and recovers.
See our Cryptocoryne range, and read our Cryptocoryne care guide and the fixing crypt melt guide before planting.
