Keeping the Black Bristlenose Pleco in Singapore Tanks
The black Bristlenose Pleco is one of the most practical algae crew members we stock, staying under 12cm and rasping biofilm and soft green algae off glass, rock and driftwood. Unlike the common pleco that outgrows most home tanks, the bristlenose fits a typical HDB community aquarium without overwhelming it. The bushy snout tentacles on mature males are normal, not a defect, and they get more pronounced with age.
Our tap water here is soft and slightly acidic, which these fish tolerate well once dechlorinated to clear chloramine. Ambient room temperature in the high twenties is fine, so no heater is needed in most flats. Give them a piece of driftwood to graze and rasp; the fibre aids digestion. Algae alone will not sustain an adult, so supplement with sinking wafers, blanched courgette and the occasional protein source after lights-out when they are most active.
See our other algae eaters if you are building a cleanup team. For long-term care and feeding specifics, read our Bristlenose Pleco care guide and diet and feeding guide, and acclimate slowly using the float method on arrival.
