Marsilea hirsuta carpets in Singapore nano tanks
Marsilea hirsuta is our pick for a low, forgiving foreground carpet, especially for hobbyists not ready for the demands of true high-tech carpets. Newly planted it sends up clover-like leaves, then settles into low single-leaf growth that creeps across the substrate to form a dense green mat. Its modest light appetite makes it one of the more achievable carpets in a moderate HDB or condo setup.
It spreads slowly but steadily by runners, so patience matters more than firepower. In Singapore’s stable 27-29C water no heater is needed, and our soft, slightly acidic tap supply suits it well. CO2 and brighter light speed up the spread and keep it tight and prostrate; in lower light it still carpets but grows taller and looser. Many local scapers establish it dry-start before flooding for a faster, denser result.
