What Denitrification Means

Typical Values and Ranges

Planted tanks typically run NO3 at 10-25 ppm because plants use it as macronutrient — denitrification is unwanted there. How to Measure

Common Imbalance Symptoms

Insufficient denitrification shows as creeping nitrate, hair algae blooms, and brown coral tissue. Deep sand beds can release stored nutrients during disturbance, often years after setup, producing a sudden spike of phosphate and ammonia.

How to Adjust

For passive denitrification, build a refugium with chaetomorpha lit by a 6500-7000K LED 18 hours daily. Reef-Octopus and Bubble Magus produce inline sulphur denitrators in the SGD 250-450 range.
