Aquarium Fish Lifespan Chart: How Long Do They Really Live?
Most aquarium fish die far younger than their biological potential allows — not because they are fragile, but because hobbyists underestimate their care needs. This aquarium fish lifespan chart guide provides realistic figures for popular species based on proper husbandry, not pet shop estimates. At Gensou Aquascaping in Singapore, we have kept and observed hundreds of species over 20 years, and the numbers below reflect what we actually see in well-maintained tanks.
Small Tropical Community Fish
Neon tetras (Paracheirodon innesi) commonly live 5-8 years in stable conditions, though most hobbyists lose them within 2 years due to poor acclimation or disease from mass-bred stock. Cardinal tetras (Paracheirodon axelrodi) are slightly shorter-lived at 4-5 years. Harlequin rasboras (Trigonostigma heteromorpha) regularly reach 6 years, making them one of the most reliable community fish for longevity.
Guppies and endlers typically live 2-3 years, with females outlasting males. The elaborate finnage of fancy guppy strains puts metabolic stress on males, shortening their lives compared to wild-type fish.
Livebearers and Killifish
Platies and swordtails average 3-4 years. Mollies can reach 5 years in brackish setups but often die younger in pure freshwater due to chronic osmotic stress. Annual killifish like Nothobranchius species live just 6-12 months by design — their entire life cycle is adapted to seasonal pools that dry up. Non-annual killifish such as Aphyosemion species manage 3-5 years comfortably.
Catfish and Plecos
Here is where lifespans get serious. Common plecos (Pterygoplichthys pardalis) live 15-20 years and grow over 40 cm — a fact conveniently omitted by shops selling them as “algae eaters” for 30-litre tanks. Corydoras species average 8-12 years, with Corydoras aeneus frequently reaching 15 in well-oxygenated tanks. Bristlenose plecos (Ancistrus spp.) live 10-12 years. Otocinclus are more delicate, averaging 3-5 years, often less due to starvation in tanks without sufficient biofilm.
Cichlids
Angelfish (Pterophyllum scalare) live 8-12 years when not kept in cramped, overheated conditions. Discus managed well can exceed 10 years. African cichlids from Lake Malawi — mbuna and haps — commonly reach 7-10 years. Oscars are the marathon runners: 12-15 years is typical, with documented cases past 20. Keeping an oscar means a decade-long commitment and a tank of at least 300 litres.
Labyrinth Fish
Betta splendens live 3-5 years, but most pet shop bettas are already 6-12 months old at purchase. If your betta dies after “only” a year at home, it may well have lived a full 2-year lifespan. Dwarf gouramis (Trichogaster lalius) average 4-5 years but are plagued by iridovirus from commercial farms — buying from reputable breeders in Singapore improves survival considerably. Pearl gouramis are hardier and routinely reach 6-8 years.
Factors That Shorten Lifespan in Singapore
Our warm ambient temperature of 28-32 °C accelerates metabolism in all fish, which can shave 10-20% off lifespans compared to fish kept at cooler temperatures in temperate countries. Chronic stress from overstocking in small HDB-friendly tanks is another common issue. Poor water quality in Singapore’s soft, chloramine-treated PUB tap water — when dechlorinator is forgotten — causes gill damage that accumulates silently over months.
Overfeeding is perhaps the biggest killer. Fatty liver disease in cichlids and livebearers is rampant among hobbyists who feed twice daily with rich foods. One modest feeding per day, with a fasting day each week, significantly extends lifespan across almost every species.
Making Your Fish Live Longer
Stable water parameters matter more than perfect parameters. A tank that holds steady at pH 7.2 and 28 °C will produce healthier, longer-lived fish than one that swings between 6.5 and 7.5 due to inconsistent maintenance. Perform 20-30% water changes weekly, feed high-quality varied diets in small portions, and resist the urge to overstock. These simple habits, practised consistently, are the real secret to fish that outlive expectations.
