Aquascaping With Air Plants Above the Tank
Open-top aquariums offer a unique opportunity to extend your aquascape beyond the waterline, and air plants are one of the easiest ways to do it. Combining underwater greenery with tillandsias and other air plants perched above the tank creates a seamless transition between aquatic and terrestrial worlds. This air plants above aquascape guide covers selection, placement and care so you can achieve this striking look at home. At Gensou Aquascaping at 5 Everton Park, we love building displays that blur the boundary between water and air.
Why Air Plants Work So Well Above Aquariums
Air plants, primarily species of the genus Tillandsia, are epiphytes that absorb water and nutrients through their leaves rather than roots. They thrive in humid environments with good air circulation, which is exactly the microclimate above an open-top aquarium. The evaporation from the tank provides natural humidity, while room ventilation supplies airflow. In Singapore’s tropical climate, where ambient humidity already sits between 70 and 90 per cent for much of the year, air plants above aquariums grow exceptionally well with minimal intervention.
Choosing the Right Air Plant Species
Not all tillandsias are equal. For above-aquarium use, select species that tolerate high humidity. Tillandsia ionantha is compact, hardy and widely available in Singapore at SGD 3 to 8 per plant. Tillandsia caput-medusae has sculptural, twisting leaves that add visual drama. Tillandsia bulbosa is another humidity-loving species with a distinctive bulbous base. Larger species like Tillandsia xerographica make striking centrepieces but prefer slightly drier conditions, so position them where they receive more airflow. Avoid fuzzy, heavily trichomed species like Tillandsia tectorum, which prefer dry, bright conditions and may rot in the damp air above a tank.
Mounting and Positioning Air Plants
Air plants can be placed on driftwood that extends above the waterline, wedged into crevices of exposed rock, rested on the tank rim, or mounted on decorative holders attached to the light fixture bracket. Avoid submerging any part of the plant in water, as prolonged submersion causes rot. If mounting on wood, use aquarium-safe silicone or simply nestle the plant into a natural fork or hollow. Wire holders and small suction cup mounts are available at craft stores and online. Group plants in odd numbers for a natural arrangement, and vary the species and sizes for visual interest.
Combining Air Plants With Emersed Aquatic Growth
For a truly cohesive look, pair your air plants with aquatic plants that grow emersed, meaning above the waterline. Many common aquarium plants produce emersed growth when given the opportunity. Anubias, Bucephalandra, Hygrophila and even some stem plants will grow out of the water if the hardscape supports them. Mosses on exposed wood transition beautifully from submerged to aerial growth. The combination of submerged aquascape, emersed aquatic plants and air plants creates a layered, naturalistic display reminiscent of a tropical stream bank.
Lighting Considerations
Air plants need bright indirect light to thrive. The aquarium light fixture typically provides sufficient illumination for plants positioned directly above the tank. Plants placed further to the sides may need supplemental light from a nearby window or a small clip-on grow light. Avoid placing air plants where they block light from reaching the submerged aquascape below. If your light fixture is adjustable or suspended, raise it slightly to accommodate the air plants without casting shadows on the underwater plants. LED fixtures with a high colour rendering index produce light that showcases both the aquascape and the air plants beautifully.
Watering and Feeding Air Plants Above the Tank
The humidity from the aquarium reduces the need for manual watering, but it does not eliminate it entirely. Mist your air plants two to three times per week, or soak them for 15 to 20 minutes in room-temperature water weekly, shaking off excess water afterward to prevent rot in the leaf bases. Use dechlorinated water or aquarium water for misting, as the nutrients in tank water provide a mild natural fertiliser. During Singapore’s drier months or if the tank is in an air-conditioned room, increase misting frequency. Feed with a diluted bromeliad or air plant fertiliser once a month during the growing season for best results.
Design Tips for a Cohesive Look
The key to a successful above-tank air plant display is making it feel like a natural extension of the aquascape rather than an afterthought. Use the same driftwood species above and below the waterline so the materials match. Allow mosses and plants to transition across the waterline without a sharp break. Keep the colour palette consistent; green and brown tones above should harmonise with the greens below. Avoid overcrowding the above-water area, as a few well-placed air plants create a stronger impression than a cluttered mass. The negative space above the water is just as important as it is within the aquascape itself.
Getting Started
Adding air plants above your aquarium is one of the simplest ways to elevate your setup from a fish tank to a living art piece. Start with two or three hardy Tillandsia ionantha placed on exposed driftwood and observe how they respond to the humidity and light conditions above your specific tank. Adjust placement and watering as needed. As your confidence grows, experiment with larger species and more complex arrangements.
