Description
Info
A very striking and unusual plant is Aponogeton madagascariensis. As its name suggests, it comes from the island of Madagascar in the Indian Ocean. The grid-like appearance of the leaves is unique and a real eye-catcher. However, the species is quite demanding in care, even for the plant connoisseur. A stronger water movement and cooler water are an advantage. Regular resting periods with low temperatures and less lighting must be observed in order to enjoy this beauty permanently.

Aponogeton madagascariensis, the Madagascar lace plant
The famous lace plant is unmistakable: its leaves form an open, lattice-like skeleton with no blade tissue between the veins, an effect found in no other common aquarium plant. It is a genuine showpiece. We are honest with customers that it is the most demanding of the Aponogeton we carry, better suited to experienced planted-tank keepers than to a first live-plant purchase.
It rewards stronger water movement and notably cooler water than most tropicals, and it insists on proper cool, dim rest periods to survive long term. That cooler requirement is the real challenge in Singapore, where unheated tanks sit at 27-29C; serious keepers here often run a chiller or a dedicated cooler resting tank to keep this species happy. Good flow past the leaves also helps keep the delicate lattice clean and algae-free.
