ECHINODORUS ´OCELOT´

The popular Echinodorus ‘Ocelot’ has been in stores for quite some time.
It has very obvious spot markings that are somewhat evocative of an ocelot’s coat.
These plants grow very well and have narrow, elliptical leaves.
New leaves have an intense brown-red to dark red colour.
Over time, the leaves turn a dark olive green and display the typical spotted pattern.
An attractive variety that grows up to 20 – 30 cm tall.
This makes it a great addition to medium-sized aquaria as well.

Echinodorus ‘Ocelot’ spotted sword for SG planted tanks

The Ocelot sword is a long-standing favourite of ours, named for the dark spot markings scattered across its leaves like an ocelot’s coat. New leaves emerge an intense brown-red to dark red before settling to dark olive green with that signature spotting, so an established plant shows several shades at once. Growing to around 20-30cm, it fits the midground of mid-sized aquariums comfortably without dominating the layout.

It is a strong, reliable grower that suits hobbyists stepping up from the easiest plants. As with all swords, the roots do most of the feeding, so we bed it into a nutrient substrate and add root tabs beneath the crown. At our ambient 27-29C it runs heaterless, and decent light brings out the deepest red on fresh leaves and the clearest spotting on mature ones. Remove only the oldest leaves as they fade.
