The ‘Bangladesh’ variant of Rotala macrandra is a striking deep-red background stem, and like its cousins it sits firmly in the high-tech category. We tell local hobbyists to treat strong lighting, pressurised CO2, and rich water-column dosing as the baseline, not extras. Heat is the recurring Singapore challenge for this group: macrandra tends to colour and grow best in cooler water, so keepers chasing the most intense red here usually run a chiller and accept that our ambient warmth softens the tone otherwise.

Plant the emersed-grown pot with breathing room between stems and give it time to switch to submerged leaves, which start pale and redden as the plant settles. Stability beats intensity: macrandra responds badly to swinging CO2 or skipped dosing days by shedding lower leaves. Regular top-and-replant trimming keeps the bush thick and the colour concentrated at the canopy where your light reaches it.
