A very striking and unusual plant is Aponogeton madagascariensis. As its name suggests, it comes from the island of Madagascar in the Indian Ocean. The grid-like appearance of the leaves is unique and a real eye-catcher. However, the species is quite demanding in care, even for the plant connoisseur. A stronger water movement and cooler water are an advantage. Regular resting periods with low temperatures and less lighting must be observed in order to enjoy this beauty permanently.

Aponogeton Henkelianus: The Madagascar Lace Plant in SG

Henkelianus is the famous lace plant, with leaves that develop an open lattice of veins rather than solid blades, making it one of the most talked-about specimens we carry. It is a connoisseur’s plant rather than a beginner pick, and in Singapore the main challenge is heat. The species prefers cooler, well-moved water, so hobbyists running ambient 27-29C tanks often see it struggle unless they add gentle flow and consider a chiller for a dedicated display.

Grown from a tuber, it appreciates strong water movement that mimics its native streams and helps keep the delicate fenestrated leaves clean of detritus. Like other Aponogeton, it benefits from a genuine rest period of lower temperature and reduced lighting once growth slows, which keeps the bulb healthy for repeat seasons. Provide CO2 and a nutrient-rich substrate to support its medium growth rate and the energy-hungry lace leaves.
