TCulture Echinodorus Amazonicus (Pot)

The Amazon Sword is a long known, time-tested aquarium plant from tropical South America. It differs from E. grisebachii ‘Bleherae’ by considerably narrower leaves. This Echinodorus wild type is quite undemanding, however medium light intensity and a nutrient-rich substrate are recommendable.

Echinodorus ‘Amazonicus’ develops a large, conspicuous rosette with countless leaves. It is especially recommended for large tanks with e.g. Discus or angelfish (Pterophyllum). The latter often use the swordplant leaves as spawning ground.

The Amazon Sword is a classic background plant we have recommended to local hobbyists for years. Its narrow-leaved rosette grows tall and full, making it a natural centrepiece for the back of community tanks. It is undemanding by sword standards, happily handling our warm 27-29C water and soft, slightly acidic tap once dechlorinated. Medium light is plenty, and CO2 is optional, though it does push lusher growth in enriched setups.

This is a heavy root feeder, so the single most important thing you can do is give it a nutrient-rich substrate or push root tabs in around the base. Plant the crown at the substrate surface with roots buried, and avoid burying the growth point. As it matures it produces countless leaves and a large rosette, so leave space for the spread. Remove older, melting outer leaves to keep the plant tidy and channel energy into fresh growth.
