Description

Common Name: Oval Ludwigia
Oval Ludwigia is an easy plant to keep, making it a great option for tank geeks who want to add color to their aquascape without the hassle associated with the colorful plants. These plants are ideal for the front zones of the tank. Their vivid color creates a superb focal point. Oval ludwigia plants have oval leaves that grow in alternating pairs along a tilted stem. The leaves are gold, orange, or red, depending on tank conditions. These plants are very attractive when planted in bunches of 10-12 stems.
Oval ludwigia is a versatile plant, but to get the desirable bright colors, you must provide high lighting and nutrient levels. High iron content will bring out more red tones in the plant. CO2 injection is not required for the cultivation of this plant, but can help it grow more robustly. The plant can be grown submersed or emersed, but it is much more difficult to cultivate in the emersed form.
Propagation can be achieved by taking cuttings from the main stem of the plant that are replanted into the substrate.

Ludwigia Ovalis (Pot) in Singapore Aquascapes

We carry Ludwigia ovalis for its distinctive oval leaves that grow in alternating pairs and shift from gold through orange to red depending on conditions. It is an easy-going stem that adds colour without the fuss of more demanding red plants, which makes it a sensible pick for hobbyists wanting an accent that performs in a range of setups. In our Singapore tanks the warm 27-29C ambient suits it submerged without a chiller, and it looks best planted in bunches.

Group ten or so stems a few centimetres apart for the fullest effect, since the colour and form read more strongly as a mass than as scattered single stems. Strong light is the main driver of the warmer tones, while CO2 and lean nitrogen push the colour further. Our chloraminated tap water suits it once dechlorinated, and regular trimming with replanting of the healthiest tops keeps the cluster dense and richly coloured over time.

Plant it in bunches and give it light for the best colour shift. See our Ludwigia ovalis emersed and submersed care and red plants troubleshooting guide, with more under background plants.
