Description

Common Name: Red Tiger Lotus
The tiger lotus is a type of water lily commonly used in aquascaping. Its bright red leaves can grow into a large and stunning specimen when planted along with green stem and carpet plants. Under high light and with the addition of CO2 and fertilizers, the leaves can turn deep red with speckles of orange and brown throughout. Although it can grow in lower light, the leaves tend to be drabber and will turn bronze colored. This plant can send leaves all the way to the surface like other water lilies.
Family Name: Nymphaeaceae
Origin: Africa
Height: 4-6”
pH: 6-7.5
Care: Easy
Light: Moderate
Co2: Not necessary
Propagation: Cut side shoots
Growth rate: Medium

Red Tiger Lotus as a Centrepiece in SG Aquascapes

The Red Tiger Lotus is one of our favourite statement plants for hobbyists who want a single dramatic focal point. From a bulb it sends up broad arrow-shaped leaves flecked with deep red and brown, and under bright light with iron-rich dosing those tones deepen beautifully. It is a striking choice for a larger HDB living-room tank where one bold specimen can anchor the whole layout.

This is a vigorous grower that, left unchecked, will throw leaves all the way to the surface like other water lilies. Many local aquascapers pinch off the floating runners to keep it compact and bushy in the mid-ground. It is undemanding about temperature and grows happily in our warm 27-29C tanks, though strong light is key to coaxing out the richest red rather than a muddy bronze.

Bury only the lower half of the bulb and leave the growing crown exposed to prevent rot. See our Red Tiger Lotus care guide and tips on growing red aquarium plants, and explore more in our background plants range.
