Description

‘Blood Red’ is the most intensely red-colored variation of Rotala rotundifolia. Placing it next to light green plants will enhance its vibrant red color.
This plant is easy to grow and can thrive in relatively low light and nutrient conditions. However, to achieve the most intense coloration, plenty of light and added CO2 are necessary.
The plant grows erect to slightly arching, producing many branches. Regular trimming is needed to ensure good light penetration and water flow among the stems.

Rotala ‘Blood Red’ for Deep Colour in SG Tanks

‘Blood Red’ gives you the reliability of rotundifolia with a far more saturated, almost wine-coloured finish. We like recommending it to hobbyists who want strong red without the fuss of true macrandra. Set against bright green midground plants the contrast reads dramatically, and the upright-to-arching habit fills a background group cleanly. It will still grow in modest light, but the colour only deepens properly under strong light with consistent CO2.

The factor people underestimate here is flow and spacing. In our climate stems shoot up quickly at 27-29C, and a crowded clump shades its own lower leaves, fading the red exactly where you want it. Regular trimming and replanting tops keeps light and water moving through the group. Singapore’s soft, slightly acidic tap water suits it well, so the main levers you control are light, CO2, and disciplined pruning.

Our Blood Red care guide covers dialling in colour, and our CO2 guide explains the injection side. See it alongside other background plants and within red-only aquascapes.
