When a seam starts to weep or you are building a custom tank, the silicone you choose matters more than most hobbyists realise. Not all sealants are safe for aquatic life. The best aquarium silicone sealant food grade products cure to a non-toxic, flexible bond that holds water pressure for years without leaching harmful chemicals. At Gensou Aquascaping in Singapore, we have resealed hundreds of tanks over two decades, and picking the wrong tube is a mistake you only want to make once.

Why Food-Grade Silicone Matters

Standard bathroom and kitchen silicones often contain anti-fungal additives like biocides or mildewcides. These chemicals leach slowly into water and are toxic to fish, shrimp, and beneficial bacteria. Food-grade or aquarium-specific silicone is 100 percent pure silicone with no additives. Always check the label for phrases like “100% silicone,” “aquarium safe,” or “no anti-fungal agents.”

Dow Corning 732 Multi-Purpose Sealant

Dow Corning 732 (now branded as Dowsil 732) is an industry workhorse. It is a one-component, acetoxy-cure silicone rated for food contact applications and widely used by professional tank builders in Asia. Adhesion to glass is excellent, and it remains flexible over decades. Expect to pay $18-$28 SGD for a 300 ml cartridge. Cure time is 24 hours for a 3 mm bead, though full structural strength develops over 7 days.

The vinegar-like smell during curing is normal for acetoxy silicones and dissipates completely once cured.

GE Silicone I (100% Silicone)

GE Silicone I has been a go-to for North American hobbyists for years. It contains no biocides and cures to a strong, flexible seal. Finding it in Singapore can be tricky, but some specialty hardware shops and Carousell sellers stock it. Price ranges from $15-$25 SGD. Make sure you buy Silicone I, not Silicone II, which contains anti-mould compounds that are toxic to aquatic life.

ADA Aqua Design Amano Silicone

ADA sells a premium aquarium silicone in small tubes for about $20-$30 SGD per 50 ml. It is specifically formulated for aquarium use and comes in both clear and black. Quality is superb, but the price per millilitre is steep. Best reserved for small spot repairs or visible seams where aesthetics justify the cost. For a full reseal job, a larger cartridge brand is far more economical.

How to Reseal an Aquarium Safely

Start by draining the tank completely and removing all livestock, substrate, and equipment. Slice away old silicone with a sharp razor blade, then clean residue off glass with isopropyl alcohol. Apply painter’s tape along both sides of each seam for crisp lines. Run a continuous bead of silicone along the joint, then smooth it with a wetted finger or silicone tool. Remove tape immediately before the sealant skins over.

Allow at least 48 hours of cure time in a ventilated area before filling with water. In Singapore’s humidity of 70-90 percent, acetoxy silicones cure slightly faster than in dry climates, but patience pays off. Fill the tank outdoors or in a bathroom for the first leak test, just in case.

Black vs Clear Silicone

Clear silicone is less visible on glass joints and suits rimless tanks where clean aesthetics matter. Black silicone hides imperfections and looks professional on framed tanks. Structurally, both perform identically. Choose based on the look you prefer. Many aquascapers at Gensou Aquascaping favour black for the back and bottom seams, and clear for front-facing joints.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Never apply new silicone over old silicone. The bond will fail within months because silicone does not adhere well to cured silicone. Always strip the old layer completely. Avoid using silicone in cartridges that have been open for more than a few weeks, as partially cured sealant inside the tube produces weak seams. Store unused cartridges sealed with a wire nail pushed into the nozzle tip to slow curing.

Where to Buy in Singapore

Horme Hardware, HomeFix, and industrial suppliers along Jalan Besar stock Dowsil products. Shopee and Lazada carry aquarium-branded silicone from various manufacturers for $10-$25 SGD. Always read seller reviews and confirm the product states “100% silicone” with no anti-fungal agents. Spending a few extra dollars on trusted silicone protects livestock worth far more than the tube itself.
