Best Fish for 30 Gallon Tank Guide: Stocking Recipes
Our best fish for 30 gallon tank guide presents five field-tested stocking recipes for the 114 L breeder and long footprints — covering community, biotope, cichlid, planted and breeder-focused setups. Gensou Aquascaping at 5 Everton Park displays three of these plans year-round so you can observe territory, schooling and feeding behaviour live.
How 30 Gallons Opens New Options
At 91 cm length, the 30 gallon unlocks species that 25s and 29s can’t hold: proper rainbowfish schools, angelfish in breeder variant, larger apistogramma pairs, and rift-lake shellie colonies. The extra 15 cm of swim room plus 46 cm breeder width transform what’s possible.
Recipe 1: Peaceful Amazon Community
12 rummynose tetras (Hemigrammus rhodostomus), 10 Corydoras sterbai, 1 pair honey gourami, 6 Otocinclus, 15 Amano shrimp. Works in both breeder and long. Peaceful, visually balanced across all three levels.
Recipe 2: Angelfish Display (Breeder Only)
1 pair Pterophyllum scalare, 10 rummynose tetras, 8 sterbai cories, 6 otos. Requires breeder at 30 cm height — do not attempt in 30 long (41 cm borderline) and never in 29 standard (46 cm body height conflict with tall water column). Feed live blackworms weekly for colour.
Angelfish Pair Dynamics
Start with 6 juveniles and let a pair form, then rehome the other four to Y618 or friends. Forcing an adult pair often fails at 114 L.
Recipe 3: South American Dwarf Cichlid Spread
2 pairs Apistogramma cacatuoides, 12 cardinal tetras (Paracheirodon axelrodi), 10 Corydoras habrosus, 10 Amano shrimp. Breeder strongly preferred — 46 cm front-to-back width allows two territories to coexist. Aquascape with driftwood forks creating sight breaks.
Recipe 4: Shellie Colony
18-22 Neolamprologus multifasciatus with 30+ Escargot snail shells scattered across a sand bed. Species-only. Hard alkaline water (pH 8.2, GH 12, KH 10) — use crushed coral in filter. Watch them dig, fight, breed in miniature. One of the most entertaining species-only 30 gallons.
Recipe 5: Rainbowfish School
8 Melanotaenia praecox (dwarf neon rainbowfish), 8 Pseudomugil luminatus (red neon blue-eye), 10 harlequin rasboras, 6 otos. 91 cm length needed for rainbowfish dart behaviour. Colour payoff under 6500K light (Chihiros WRGB II 90 SGD 480) is spectacular.
Species to Skip in 30 Gallons
Common plecos (40 cm), silver dollars, tinfoil barbs, bala sharks, goldfish (high bioload), discus (need 114 L per pair plus perfect water), tiger barbs (only in groups of 15+ — crowds 30 gallon). Oscars absolutely not (grow to 35 cm).
Centerpiece Options
If a single “wow” fish appeals: 1 Bolivian ram pair (breeder or long), 1 pair pearl gourami (91 cm gives them cruise room), or 1 single German blue ram. Avoid mixing centerpieces — two cichlid species in 114 L is asking for territory wars.
Shrimp and Snail Notes
Amano shrimp (SGD 3 each) handle algae; Neocaridina davidi (SGD 1.50-6 depending on grade) colonise planted 30 gallons. Nerite snails (SGD 2) eat glass diatoms. Avoid mystery snails with angelfish — antennae get nipped.
Drip-acclimate 60 min. Quarantine 14 days in 20 L QT with prazipro, even Iwarna Aquafarm stock. Rainbowfish and apistogramma are especially prone to shipping stress — float bags 20 min before drip. Our quarantine setup guide covers minimum viable.
Feeding by Recipe
Amazon community: Hikari Micro Pellets + frozen daphnia. Angelfish: pellets + live blackworms. Apistos: Hikari Vibra Bites + frozen brine shrimp. Shellies: sinking cichlid granules + brine shrimp. Rainbowfish: high-protein flake + live artemia. Budget SGD 40-60/month in foods.
