Best Fish for 40 Gallon Tank Guide: Community and Species

This best fish for 40 gallon tank guide is written for Singapore hobbyists who land on the 40 gallon breeder (91 x 46 x 41 cm, roughly 151 L) as their first proper community tank. At Gensou Aquascaping, 5 Everton Park, we stock and maintain dozens of these builds every month, so the species list below reflects what genuinely thrives in HDB conditions — not textbook theory copied from North American forums.

Why 40 Gallons Works So Well

A 40 breeder gives you 91 cm of swimming length with a generous 46 cm front-to-back depth. That depth matters: it lets you aquascape in true layers and it dampens the aggression you see in skinny 33 gallon tanks. You also get enough water volume that PUB tap water swings and 28-30°C ambient heat are forgiving.

Schooling Centrepieces

Cardinal tetras, rummynose tetras and harlequin rasboras all shine at 12-15 fish. Rummynose in particular pack tighter when they have room to cruise the 91 cm length. Expect SGD $2.50-$4 each at C328 Clementi on weekends.

Bottom Dwellers

Panda corydoras, sterbai corydoras or kuhli loaches in groups of 8-10 cover the substrate. Sterbai tolerate Singapore’s warmer water better than most cory species, which is why we default to them at our Everton Park studio.

A Single Showpiece

One angelfish, one pearl gourami or a trio of honey gouramis works as the visual anchor. Avoid keeping two male angels — 46 cm depth is still not enough to stop a dominance war. See our angelfish care notes before committing.

Shrimp and Invertebrates

Amano shrimp (6-10) and nerite snails are safer than neocaridina once you have tetras hunting. If you want cherry shrimp colonies to breed, plan a separate shrimp tank — check our cherry shrimp breeding primer.

Stocking Combinations That Work

Combo A: 15 cardinals + 10 sterbai + 1 angel + 6 amanos. Combo B: 12 rummynose + 8 kuhli + 3 honey gouramis + nerites. Combo C: 20 chili rasboras + 10 panda cory + 1 pearl gourami — a nano-leaning build we love for planted tanks. More permutations in our 40 gallon stocking ideas.

Species to Avoid

Oscars, common plecos, silver dollars, bala sharks and tinfoil barbs all outgrow a 40 gallon within 18 months. Singapore LFS will sell them to you as 5 cm juveniles — do not take the bait. Tiger barbs, while sized right, are fin-nippers that wreck most community mixes.

Heating and Cooling

Tank temperature in an un-airconned HDB living room sits at 29-31°C. Cardinals, rummynose, sterbai and gouramis handle this fine. A clip-on fan can drop 1-2°C during evening water changes. Heaters are only relevant if you run aircon 24/7.

Planting for Stocking Support

Heavy planting with vallisneria, cryptocoryne wendtii and anubias on hardscape doubles your biofilter capacity and gives shy fish cover. Our beginner planted tank guide walks through the layout logic.

Singapore Sourcing Summary

C328 Clementi is the weekend hub — cardinals SGD $3, sterbai SGD $8-$10, pearl gouramis SGD $15. Y618 Serangoon North carries premium rummynose at SGD $4-$5 and healthy panda cory around SGD $6. Green Chapter Jurong West stocks honey gouramis and chili rasboras in good condition. Iwarna Aquafarm is the destination for wild-caught angels and rare tetras (SGD $25-$60). Nature Aquarium Gallery on Thomson Road pairs fish with ADA-style scapes if you want the aesthetic matched. Polyart leans reef but carries nerite snails SGD $2 each. On Carousell, used 40 breeders with stand run SGD $120-$200; Shopee offers sponge filters, Amano shrimp packs (10 for SGD $25) and heaters. Always quarantine for 14 days regardless of source.
