Borneo Stream Biotope: Crystal Water and Ancient Fish
Borneo’s ancient rainforest streams are home to some of the most fascinating fish in the hobby — from acrobatic hillstream loaches to jewel-toned gobies and delicate chocolate gouramis. A Borneo stream biotope captures the crystal-clear, tea-stained waters flowing over pebble beds beneath a dense jungle canopy. This Borneo stream biotope aquascape guide from Gensou Aquascaping at 5 Everton Park brings Southeast Asia’s most biodiverse island into your tank.
The Natural Habitat
Borneo’s streams range from fast-flowing hill torrents to slow blackwater creeks. The water is typically very soft (GH 0–4), acidic (pH 4.5–6.5), and stained amber by tannins from decomposing leaf litter on the forest floor. The substrate is a mix of sand, pebbles and fallen leaves. Submerged driftwood and root tangles from overhanging trees create complex habitats. Light is filtered through dense canopy, creating dappled, shaded conditions.
Tank Setup
A 90 cm or longer tank best captures the stream feel. Use fine sand or smooth river pebbles as the primary substrate. Add a generous layer of dried leaves — catappa (Indian almond) leaves are ideal and widely available in Singapore. The leaves release tannins that stain the water amber and lower pH naturally. Moderate water flow from a canister filter mimics stream current. Keep lighting subdued — these are shaded forest streams.
Hardscape
Smooth river stones and rounded pebbles in earthy tones create the streambed. Driftwood — especially twisted root pieces and branching spider wood — replicates submerged tree roots and fallen branches. Arrange driftwood to extend from the back corners inward, as if roots are reaching into the water from an unseen bank. Scatter smaller twigs and branches across the substrate for authenticity.
Plants
Many Borneo stream plants are familiar to aquarists. Cryptocoryne species grow along the banks and in shallows — C. cordata, C. griffithii and C. usteriana are all Bornean. Bucephalandra is endemic to Borneo, growing on rocks and wood in streams — the ideal biotope plant. Java Fern and Java Moss also occur naturally. Attach Bucephalandra and ferns to hardscape with super glue for a natural appearance. Floating plants like Salvinia provide surface shade.
Fish Selection
Chocolate gourami (Sphaerichthys osphromenoides): A delicate, beautiful Bornean species that thrives in soft, acidic water. Keep in groups of six or more.
Harlequin rasbora (Trigonostigma heteromorpha): One of the most iconic Southeast Asian aquarium fish, originating from Borneo and the Malay Peninsula.
Betta species (wild types): Several wild Betta species come from Borneo — B. brownorum, B. ibanorum and others. These are far more subdued than domestic bettas but fascinating in their natural behaviour.
Pangio (kuhli) loaches: Several Pangio species are found in Borneo, burrowing in the sandy substrate.
Stiphodon gobies: For faster-flowing biotope variants, these colourful algae-grazing gobies cling to rocks in current.
Water Parameters
Soft, acidic water is essential: pH 5.0–6.5, GH 0–4 dGH, KH 0–2 dKH. Use RO water remineralised with a GH booster designed for soft-water species, or blend RO with Singapore tap water to achieve the target hardness. Catappa leaves and driftwood tannins naturally lower pH. Temperature should be 24–28 °C — Singapore’s ambient warmth is ideal.
Maintenance
Replace decomposing leaves every two to three months to maintain tannin supply. Perform gentle 20 per cent water changes weekly using water matched to the tank’s soft, acidic parameters. This biotope develops a natural, aged look over time as leaves decompose, biofilm colonises wood, and Bucephalandra slowly spreads across the hardscape — patience rewards you with an increasingly authentic and beautiful display.
