Growing Bucephalandra sp. Akantha in Singapore

Akantha is a compact, dark-leaved bucephalandra that rewards patience, and as an epiphyte it belongs on hardscape rather than buried in substrate. We recommend it to local keepers building shaded, mature-looking scapes because it stays small and tolerates the low-to-moderate light most planted tanks here run. Tie or superglue the rhizome onto driftwood or rock, keeping the rhizome itself uncovered so it doesn’t rot.

Our soft, slightly acidic tap water suits it well, and it’s undemanding enough to skip CO2, though a little injection sharpens colour and growth. Like most buce it may shed a few leaves while adjusting from emersed stock before pushing fresh submerged growth, so don’t disturb it during that window. Gentle flow keeps the fine leaves clean in our warm tanks.

See more in our epiphytes range, and read our bucephalandra care guide, our browning leaves fix, and our epiphyte aquascape guide to place it well.
